Thomas Jay Staley, 60, of Norfolk, VA, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025. Born on February 3, 1965, in Norfolk to Barbara Mildred Coles and Thomas Ray Staley, TJ spent his life deeply connected to the place and people he loved most.
TJ was a man who found peace and joy in the natural world. Whether casting a line into the water or gliding across it in a kayak, he was most at home outdoors. A lifelong explorer at heart, he had a deep love for science fiction-particularly Star Trek and Star Wars-which inspired his imagination and sense of wonder. He was a collector of many things, especially crystals, and embraced a spiritual path that honored his Native American heritage.
TJ dedicated much of his life to hard, honest work-most recently as a Machine Operator for Terramar USA. His hands helped build and move the world around him, whether through construction, industrial work, or his early service as a volunteer EMS member, offering help and hope to others in times of need.
He is survived by his beloved children, Jenna and Michael Staley, and their mother, Trisha Smith; his sister, Nancy Rade (Richard), and their children Eric, Brooks, and Bradley; his brother, Mark Staley; and many other cherished family members and friends who will forever hold his memory close.
TJ was preceded in death by his mother and father, Barbara and Thomas R. Staley, and his brother, Gary Staley.
Known for his big heart, easygoing spirit, and a deep connection to the world around him, TJ will be missed more than words can express. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, curiosity, and quiet strength.
There will be no services at this time. The family kindly asks that his memory be honored with respect and privacy.
Cremation and Funeral Services of Tidewater is handling the arrangements.
