Thomas Gene West, 79, passed away peacefully at his residence in Newport, North Carolina on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
Born on August 19, 1944, to the late William and Lila West, Thomas spent his formative years in Erwin, NC where he attended First Baptist Church. He found great joy in the camaraderie of the Erwin Goodfellas, an association he was proud to be a part of for many years. His patriotism led him to serve in the National Guard for six years, displaying his unwavering love for his country.
After completing high school, Thomas pursued further education at Campbell University specializing in Business. His professional journey flourished with a rewarding 30-year tenure at AT&T. Thomas was an avid Campbell fan as well as UNC and faithfully rooted for his home teams.
Upon retirement, he and his wife Janet ventured to Montana where he resided for seven fulfilling years. The vast outdoors captivated Thomas; fishing and hunting being his favorite pastimes. He had great memories of his time in Montana, always appreciating the expansive landscapes and breathtaking natural beauty.
In 2006, Thomas and Janet returned to Erwin before eventually relocating to Bogue Watch on the Crystal Coast in 2015 where he found contentment in coastal living.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 55 years, Janet West; son, Jeffrey West and wife Michelle of Pennsylvania, along with her 4 children; sisters, Brenda DeShong of Goldsboro, NC and Betty Bayles and husband Seamon of Erwin, NC; sisters-in-law, Peggy West of Dunn, NC and Kathy Combs of Arizona; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his brothers, William West and Robert West; and brother-in-law, Bill DeShong.
