Like so many, I´m indebted to Tom for giving us die-hard hoopers a place to continue to play competitively. He grew the "Northbridge League" to where the entire Central Mass. region converged on Lynnwood Park each Tuesday and Thursday night every summer. I looked forward to it, so many guys did.
It was unique and special, though, because of the man who ran it.
In a lot of ways, the league embodied Tom´s huge heart. He wanted competitive players to play with "buddies" and new "recruits"-but he wanted parity too. And he made a trillion phone calls to make it all happen. The work he put into the league was tremendous. I´m grateful for that.
His caring nature was on display every night as he greeted everyone, striking up conversations and checking in. He had a gift for seeing the good in people. He also looked out for younger guys, bringing them in the league whenever possible. On many nights, he kept score and time-just to watch a good matchup or a player, adding objective commentary here and there. I can still picture him, scorebook in hand, pencil in his ear, walking along the fence, sitting in the bleacher.
I also admired that he was fiercely protective of the league. He was protecting its legacy. I also admired that he was loyal and principled. Man, I have so much admiration for Tom-but it goes way beyond a basketball league.
As much as I loved that league and appreciated all his work, I´ll still remember Tom as one of the most friendly, genuinely caring people I´ve ever met. I´ll remember his smile, his kind words, the depth of his questions. Now, that might sound weird given he´s the same guy who´d regularly drop Charles Oakley-like chuck-screen on opponents, leaving them wincing and freeing Al or Paul for an easy jumper.
But Tom was truly an extraordinary person: so kind and thoughtful. I´m proud to say he´s been inspirational to me. I´m blessed to have known him.
We all were.
