Tommie George Davis was born on September 13, 1934, in Shreveport, Louisiana, the only child of Tom Rucks and Moselle Tiller Davis.
He passed away on Thursday morning, May 15, 2025, at his home in Carthage at the age of 90.
He grew up in the country (Latex) surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. He attended Bethany Elementary School and later attended junior and senior high school in Carthage, graduating in the class of 1953.
He worked his way through college, paying for all of his education, including Baylor University where he received his law degree in 1959. In 1958, during his last year of law school, he married Mary Lu Watkins, and they were blessed with two daughters.
After graduation, he worked for Humble Oil and as an Assistant District Attorney in Tyler before moving to Carthage to partner with Tom Bankhead. Later, he had his own practice until his retirement. From the 1960s on, he was active in the oil and gas space, where he found success and many lifelong friends in an industry he loved.
Tommie George also loved to have fun, and he is remembered by his family and friends for his long Cherokee Club lunches on Fridays, as an outdoorsman, for his love of New Orleans and great jazz, and for countless bird hunting and fishing trips in West Texas, South Louisiana, and Mexico.
He is survived by Mary Lu, his wife of 66 years, daughters Mary Ella Sherman and Leigh Davis (Teri Price), grandchildren Robert Davis Sherman (Kristi), Mary Elaine Finch (Dan), and Anna Kate Sherman, great-grandchildren George Sherman, Isabelle Sherman, and Mary Belle Finch, cousins Martha Anne Tiller, Lloyd Tiller, and Janis Tiller, and special friend Bubba Patterson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Moselle, and son-in-law Robert Sherman.
The Davis family is grateful for the outstanding and compassionate care provided to Tommie George by his around-the-clock caregivers and the hospice care provided by Hearts Way Hospice.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Odd Fellows Cemetery with Rev. Jennene Laurinec officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home for a visitation.
Memorials may be made to the Carthage ISD Education Foundation, #1 Bulldog Dr., Carthage, TX 75633 or to the Panola College Foundation, 1109 W. Panola St., Carthage, TX 75633.
