Valerie was born on May 4, 1959, one day after her mother's birthday May 3rd. There's no question that Valerie Gail Myers loved her family. In fact, it started the day she was born - she loved her mother so much she tried to share a birthday (May 3) but just missed it and was born a day later (May 4). That was the story of Valerie - or as we knew her - Val's life. A life characterized by the love she gave and maybe more so the love she received.

Val was born at St. David's Hospital in Austin in 1959 where her family was living while her dad was getting his masters degree in engineering. In 1960, they moved to Wichita Falls where she graduated from Rider High School with honors. She played in the marching band and worked summer jobs, including becoming an expert in the art of "fries" at Burger King. She beat her older sister Christi regularly in chess and also liked to "borrow" her things so often Christi once had to draw a line down the center of their shared room.

Val went on to graduate with honors from Sam Houston State University with a degree in criminal justice and soon married and had two daughters, Adrienne Ellis Hamblin and Alexa Ellis Flynn. Her daughters were the great love of her life.

After having kids, she explored a variety of interests that harkened back to her love of people. She got an EMS certification to learn how to save lives, earned a real estate license in San Antonio to help people find their dream homes and later became a certified massage therapist to relieve terrible pain for her patients. Her storied back massages were so popular that at family Thanksgivings and gatherings, you practically needed to get on a wait list to get one.

Val also loved animals. When she was 15, she volunteered to work at a horse stable for no pay, cleaning the stalls in exchange for riding the horses. She taught one horse named Dolly to quick stop and jump. Over the years, Val rescued and trained dogs, including a pet wolf dog Sheba that was legend in her neighborhood. Even towards the end of her life, she adopted and took care of Bailey, a Cairn Terrier rescue.

But Val's greatest interest was her faith. A highlight of her life was taking a trip to Israel with her family to see where Jesus walked. It was her faith that gave her the courage to keep fighting cancer years after her doctors told her the disease was terminal.

Val's love allowed her to often see the best in people and try to help those down on their luck. In that way, she took after her father and made friends with all kinds of people, and Val lived a life that was boldly her own.

And now it's a love for Val that brings her family all back together for the first time in years.

Val's favorite color was purple, and in her spirit, her daughters will be wearing it to the graveside. They even found her a purple casket.

Purple is interesting because it can symbolize multiple things. It can symbolize creativity, and anyone can tell you Val certainly thought outside the box. It can symbolize peace, which she is at now. It can symbolize artistic expression like Val's mother Joyce, the artist and Val's birthday twin, with whom she is now reunited. When her parents were buried in Electra on the plot she now joins, we placed purple and multicolored butterflies. Maybe if you see one, you can know that's her.

Or maybe you'll know that if you just look into the faces of her seven grandchildren and two daughters and sister who were there for her until the end.

Val is survived by her daughter Adrienne, son-in-law Kevin Hamblin and grandsons Jackson Hamblin and Collin Hamblin of Rockwall; daughter Alexa Flynn, son-in-law Jason Flynn and grandchildren Hudson Hart, Braelynn Hart, Dylan Hart, Callen Flynn and Camryn Flynn of Prosper; sister Christi Myers, brother-in-law Russell Laughead and nephew Aaron Laughead and niece Laura Laughead of Houston.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Joyce Myers, who grew up in Electra but were longtime residents of Wichita Falls, Austin and Paris, Texas.

Her graveside service will be on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. in Electra Memorial Park with Mike Rucker of Wichita Falls officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Electra.
