Vernice Winfield Mack, "Vee or Miss Vee", 91, of Frederick, died Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Kline Hospice House following a series of medical challenges. Born in Stony Creek, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late George and Emmaline (Key) Winfield. Even though she was her parents' only child, Vernice was raised in a loving home with numerous cousins, an uncle (George Key) who grew up as her younger brother and Marjorie Bonner, who joined the Winfield household at the age of four.
Vernice's love for education began early when she attended Masontown School for primary and secondary education. She was the first in her immediate family to attend college, Virginia State (College) University, where she received an undergraduate degree. She pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and met her future husband LeCoast Mack. It was early in her career when she pursued and achieved a graduate degree in education from Johns Hopkins University. She was adamant about education.
Vernice and LeCoast Mack married in 1956 and moved to Frederick, Maryland in the early 1960s, which is where she built a career as an elementary school teacher in the Frederick County School system. Over the years, while balancing a career and raising a family, she became and remained very active in the community.
Vernice was devoted to First Missionary Baptist Church (FMBC) of Frederick, Maryland for more than 55 years, where she served as a Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher. She also served and enjoyed participating in several local and national organizations. Most notably, she joined the Frederick Chapter of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club (NANBPW), Inc. shortly after moving to Frederick. She's been an active member of the Chi Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA), Inc. since its inception in Frederick, and she was an active participant in the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed traveling around the world with friends and family, visiting places she taught about in school. She also volunteered with the Frederick County Board of Elections, and Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, including the Select Seconds shop. She enjoyed watching a variety of sports, participating in a duckpin bowling league and dancing.
To cherish her memory, she leaves her daughters, Karen Mack and Kimberly Mack-Coates; son-in-law, Leslie Coates III; "adopted" sister, Marjorie Williams; grandsons, Brenden and Bryson Coates; and a host of cousins, close associates, and dear friends. Vernice was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Services for Vernice Mack will begin with a wake on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at Rollins Life Celebration Center, 330 Catoctin Ave, Frederick MD (doors will be closed between 6:00 – 6:30pm for the AKA ceremony). On Thursday, September 11, 2025, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 6430 Jefferson Pike, Frederick, MD, there will be a public viewing at 10 a.m. with the funeral at 11 a.m. Pastor Timothy McLaurin, Jr. will officiate. Interment will be on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Little Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, 23503 Flatfoot Rd, Stony Creek, VA, starting with a public viewing at 12pm and concluding with a graveside service at 12:30pm.
