Virginia "Anne" Johnson, 87, passed away on December 13, 2025 in the comfort of her home.
Born on June 30, 1938 to Fred Ross and Martha Virginia (Weeks) Treadaway. She married Joseph Dennis Pickering in 1955, soon after graduating from Aiken High School. Together they had 5 children. Joe, Randy, Russell, Beverly and a baby girl. In 1973, Anne graduated from the first Registered Nursing program at USC-Aiken. Over her 30 year career as a nurse, she worked for Aiken County hospital, Aiken Regional, Edgefield hospital and the VA uptown division . Later in life, she met and married Claude Johnson. Together they were very involved in GasCar, an antique car club and enjoyed the many trips they took in their 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 XL. Anne was a wonderful cook and never let anyone leave her house without offering them something to eat.
She is survived by her daughter Beverly who lovingly cared for her the past two years; her grandchildren, Tyler (Rachel) Jones, Mount Pleasant SC. Alissa (Spencer) Starnes, Augusta GA. Hunter (Jessica) Broadwater, Cartersville GA. Taylor Pickering, North Augusta SC; stepbrother Charles “Chuck” Martin, Aiken SC; lastly, her fur babies Princess Sue and Oscar.
Anne was predeceased by 4 of her children, baby girl in 1968, Joe 2009, Randy 2016, Russell 2017; her grandson Joseph D Pickering III 1997; her sister Frederica Treadaway 2004; and her husband Claude in 2024.
The family would like to pay a special thanks to her long time caregiver, Shakena Johnson, Helping Hands of Aiken and Blessings and Blossoms for the care they have given to us.
A visitation will be held Friday, December 19, 2025 from 2:00-3:30 PM, and a Celebration of Life will follow at 3:30 PM in the Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Phillip Lee will officiate. The Nurses Honor Guard of South Carolina Nightingale Tribute will follow the service
