Willis Dan Redden of Pocomoke City, MD died peacefully at the age of 92, on January 29, 2022 at Hartley Hall. He was born on the family farm just outside of Goodwill near Pocomoke City on August 5, 1929. He was the son of the late Willis Aydelotte and Willie Trader Redden. Dan was a 1946 graduate of Pocomoke High School where he played varsity soccer, basketball and baseball.
A lifelong farmer in grains and hogs; in his earlier years raised tomatoes and peppers. Upon his retirement, he made frequent visits to the farm shop to share his experience with his son, grandson and great grandson and help with whatever they needed on the farm.
For many years Dan enjoyed square dancing and regularly attended dances. He also appreciated the coffee hour at Hardees. He loved his Allis Chalmers tractors, restoring them and showing them in the Blessing of the Combines each year.
Dan was a member of Salem Church for 79 years; a life member of Pocomoke City Elks Lodge 1624; Worcester County Farm Bureau and served for 54 years as a supervisor of the Worcester County Soil Conservation District.
Dan was known for his gift of storytelling. He always had a collection of stories to tell for any occasion. Many were memories of his and recollections of his family and local history.
He was very proud when a farm purchased by his grandfather in 1892 on Redden Road was designated a Maryland Century Farm in 2017. The Redden farming legacy continues with his son Willis, his grandson, the fifth generation, Willis Jr. with whom he had a special bond, and alongside him is Willis III, the sixth generation.
Dan was awarded the Best Feeder Pig Grower in Maryland in 1985.
Dan is survived by his son Willis E Redden, Sr (Kathryn) Pocomoke City MD. Two grandchildren Willis E. Redden Jr. (Tiffany Marshall) Pocomoke City MD. Kelley K. Phillips (Corey) Delmar DE. Three great grandchildren Willis E. Redden III, Josey C. Redden and Reese M. Phillips; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A special friend Carolyn Hudson, Bishopville, MD.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Teresa R. Lewers 2018, brother Chauncey L. "Chick" Redden (1968), his sister Eleanor R. Merrill (2001) and the mother of his children Mary "Gay" Shields Redden (2000).
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 500 2nd St., Pocomoke City, MD 21851.
A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Joseph W. Barth, will be held on February 12 at 2 pm. where family and friends will gather from 12:30 – 2:00 pm prior to the service at Holloway Funeral Home - Pocomoke. The Elks memorial service will also be conducted. Interment will follow in the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pocomoke City, MD. Fellowship to follow at the Elks Lodge 1624, Route 113, Pocomoke City, MD.
