Walter Kane Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by O'Donnell Funeral Home on Jun. 26, 2025.
Retired Major, Massachusetts State Police

Walter J. Kane, Jr., 89, formerly of Lowell and Littleton, Massachusetts, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2025. Born in Lowell on February 21, 1936, he was the son of the late Walter J., Sr. and Sarah (Martin) Kane. Walter graduated from Lowell High School in 1954 and the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 1959. He proudly served in the State Police from 1959 to 1981, rising to the rank of Major. During his career, he was honored to help protect many dignitaries and world leaders, including Pope John Paul II, President and Mrs. Kennedy, and President and Mrs. Carter.

An avid runner, Walter ran with the Greater Lowell Road Runners, successfully completing the Boston Marathon 4 times when he was in his 50s. He was particularly proud of his personal best time of 3:29:17.

In his later years, Walter retired to Marco Island/Goodland, Florida, where he enjoyed fishing, working out (and socializing) at the YMCA, investing in real estate (successfully), and dabbling in the stock market (less successfully). He loved a good book, an occasional beer, a rare steak, Neil Diamond, and rooting for all Boston sports teams!

Walter is survived by his wife Judith Kane of Nashua, NH; his daughter, Maureen Kane of New York City, NY; his sons John Kane and his wife Kimberly of Nashua, NH, and Michael Kane and his wife Anna of New York City, NY; a granddaughter, Kailey Kane; and three grandsons, Jack, Finn, and Ronan Kane. He was preceded in death by his brothers Edward H. Kane and Thomas F. Kane and his sister Mary Louise Kane.

A private memorial service will be held by his family. E-condolences at www.odonnellfuneralhome.com. Arrangements by the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME – LOWELL – MA – (978) 458-8768.
