Wayne R. Peterhans, 99, of Frankenmuth, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. Born on October 26, 1925, in Caro, Michigan, he was the son of the late Ray and Saloma (Haist) Peterhans. Wayne's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community.
Wayne was a proud graduate of Caro High School, class of 1943. His sense of duty led him to serve his country in the United States Army during World War II. As a teletype operator, he played a role in a pivotal moment in history when the Japanese surrender came across his teletype. He had the honor of sending this monumental news to NBC in New York, a moment that he would remember and recount with pride throughout his life.
After his military service, Wayne returned to Michigan and embarked on a successful career. In his personal life, Wayne was blessed with a loving family. He married the former Clara Field, and together they shared 50 years of marriage until her passing in 1997.
He was employed at Eaton Corp, where he served as the purchasing manager for both the Vassar facility and the office in Kentucky until his retirement. His strong work ethic and leadership skills were evident to all who worked with him.
Wayne later found love again and married Janet Grace Mallory on October 11, 1997, in Richville at Mallory's Restaurant, where he enjoyed helping his wife and engaging with the community.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Janet Grace Mallory-Peterhans; his children, Michelle Eschelbach and Marci (Charles) Peterhans; Janet's children, Mary Beth (Bruce) Hemingway, Kevin Bender, Julie Bender, and Mark (Tina) Bender; his loving grandchildren, Minna (John), Molly, Cameron (Kristina), Cortland, Colin, Melanie, Rory (Kathryn), Cameron, and Ryse; and ten great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a special friend, Michael Eschelbach. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Saloma; his first wife, Clara; his siblings, Handy (Marie) Peterhans, Morris (Hazel) Peterhans, and Donald (Betty Lou) Peterhans; and his grandson, Greg Stephen Geesey Jr.
A 32nd degree Mason, Wayne was strong in his faith and an active member of the United Methodist Church. He lived his beliefs through his actions, always ready to lend a hand. His love for people was evident in his enjoyment of conversation and his genuine interest in the lives of others.
Wayne's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. In his younger years, he enjoyed golfing and later became an active member of the Point Nipigon Resort Club in Cheboygan, MI. His retirement years were filled with activities that brought him joy and allowed him to connect with friends and family.
Wayne lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and integrity. As we say farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the nearly a century of memories he created and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
