William Arthur Creager Jr., known to all as Bill, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and the warmth of a life well lived.
Bill was born on April 26, 1932, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. His parents, Annette Logan Creager Durstine and William Arthur Creager, moved to the Columbus suburb of Bexley with Bill and his sister Mary Anne. Upon graduating from Bexley High School, Bill received a full scholarship to Wittenberg University and an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. He entered the Naval Academy in July 1950, graduating in June 1954.
Bill began his distinguished career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation at their Bettis Laboratories in Pittsburgh, working on nuclear power projects, including the first successful nuclear submarine. While in Pittsburgh, Bill met and married the love of his life, Marilyn Lousie Jordan, another Columbus native. Their son, Matthew, was born in Pittsburgh.
In 1959, Bill accepted a position with the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. While working for the government, their daughter, Anne, was born. He left government service and began working for several Washington-based consulting firms. In 1964, he earned a Master's degree in Engineering Administration from George Washington University.
In 1969, Bill founded Capital Systems Group (CSG), an information management firm, which he led until 1984 when he sold the company. At the time of the sale, CSG was one of the largest privately-owned information management companies in the Washington D.C. area. In 1987, Bill and Marilyn moved from McLean, Virginia, to Kilmarnock, Virginia. He continued to work as a consultant to private sector and government clients on matters dealing with strategic planning, business development, and information management until his full retirement in 1991.
During the more than thirty years he lived in the Northern Neck, Bill and Marilyn traveled extensively both domestically and abroad, an activity they both cherished. Bill also devoted significant time to various local business and non-profit organizations. His service included Chairman of Bay Trust Company, Director of Bay Banks of Virginia and The Bank of Lancaster, Director and President of Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury, Trustee of the Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, Trustee of the Foundation for Historic Christ Church, the Virginia Tech Foundation, the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, Hillsdale College, and the Sons of the American Revolution.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Marilyn Jordan Creager, and their two children: son Matthew and his wife Maureen, and daughter Anne and her husband Thomas DiBenedetto. He also leaves behind three devoted grandchildren: Julia and Thomas DiBenedetto Jr. and Ellen Creager, and a great-granddaughter, Sienna Lillian DiBenedetto, daughter of Thomas DiBenedetto Jr. and Jessica DiBenedetto.
