William "Bill" Guarini, 95 of Manasquan, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on Friday March 25, 2022 at home. Born in Jersey City, NJ, he later raised a family in Clifton, NJ before retiring to the Jersey Shore.
Generous and kind-hearted, in life Bill was a friend to all, and always found common ground and common laughs with people from all walks of life.
Bill was one of the The Greatest Generation, leaving high school at age 17 to enlist in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he honorably served in the Pacific theater before returning home, earning his high school degree, and resuming his American life. Always proud of his service and his son's Navy career, his daily "uniform" later in life consisted of a Navy sweatshirt and a World War II veteran ballcap.
Jersey City is where Bill's roots were deepest, and throughout his life it was often said of him, "You can take the man out of Jersey City, but you can't take the Jersey City out of the man." Jersey City forged his character, ethics, and life-long friendships, and over 40 years he grew a small storefront plumbing shop into one of Jersey City's largest and most successful. William J. Guarini Plumbing & Heating trucks can often be seen throughout Hudson County and beyond.
Bill was an avid fan of baseball and football - the Yankees, Mets, Giants, and Navy Football most of all - and later in life enjoyed bowling and bocce ball. He was a lifelong aficionado of poker and card games. Oh, and how he loved a good cigar! Bill loved eating big meals in restaurants, and always his pasta had to be al dente, his steak rare, and his soup boiling hot. Throughout his life, Bill was involved in numerous civic and cultural organizations including UNICO, the Dante Alighieri Society, American Legion Post 529, and the Italian American Association of Ocean Township.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife Mary Lou (née Richardi) Guarini of Manasquan, NJ, a beloved son and daughter-in-law Captain William J. Guarini, Jr. USN (retired) and Tracy of Rockville, MD, and three adored grandchildren: William Joseph IV, Claire Elizabeth, and Alexander Joseph. He was preceded in death by his cherished daughter Catherine Rose Guarini, and he joined her in eternal rest on what would have been her 56th birthday. Bill was the adored uncle and the family patriarch to many loving nephews and nieces.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday March 29, 2022, from 4-8 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road Manasquan, NJ 08736. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at St Denis Church, Manasquan. In Bill's generous and compassionate spirit, memorial donations may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project (in support of veterans) at www.woundedwarriorproject.org or Jespy House (in memory of his daughter Cathy) at www.jespyhouse.org. To the Guarini family. My deepest sympathies on your loss. I have a great memory of "Billy" as my mom and dad (Chet & Jean) called him back in the Jersey City days. I was a little kid and my dad took me to a Giant game w Bill at Yankee stadium. I remember how much fun we had and that it was really cold "Billy" had on one of those 70 era Russian hats, a cigar in his mouth and a smile on his face. He was bigger than life for me.
