William Joe Mathews, 43, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on June 7, 2025. He was born on January 8, 1982, in Midland, Michigan, to Bambi Grove-Simpson and the late William Joe Mathews Sr.
William was a man of many talents-someone who could work just as well with his hands as with his mind. From building houses to creating apps on a computer, he approached every task with determination and creativity. No matter the challenge, he'd figure it out somehow.
He was known for his generous spirit and willingness to help others, always offering a hand to anyone in need. Those who really knew him knew his heart. William had recently found stability and community at Mister Car Wash in Mt. Pleasant, where he made good friends and was proud to have secured a solid job as he worked to turn his life around.
William's greatest joys in life were his family. He deeply loved his son, William Paul Mathews III, and his daughter by choice, Destiny Oliver-Shepperson, whom he cared for as his own. He doted on his grandson Khyree Oliver-Shepperson by choice with all the love and pride in the world. A loving son, William often reached out to his mother just to check in and say, "I love you, Mom." That love and connection meant everything.
He is survived by his mother, Bambi Grove-Simpson, his beloved son, William Paul Mathews III, daughter Destiny Oliver-Shepperson & siblings Michael Mathews, Heather VanWert and Jonathon Simpson and many friends and loved ones who will miss his kind soul, resourcefulness, and the way he could always find light in the dark.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Joe Mathews Sr.
A funeral service will be held on June 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, with Pastor Don Duford officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider supporting the family in William's honor.
