It is with deep love and gratitude that we announce the passing of William "Bill" Rickhoff, who departed this world on March 24, 2026, at the age of 89. A man of intellect, service, and enduring loyalty, Bill leaves behind a legacy defined by his devotion to family and a life lived with curiosity and grace.
A proud Chicagoan for much of his life, Bill's journey was marked by a commitment to excellence. He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps before embarking on a distinguished professional career. Blending technical mastery with a passion for education, Bill worked as an engineer in Chicago and shared his expertise as a member of the research faculty at the University of Notre Dame.
His loyalty to the Fighting Irish was more than a pastime; it was a lifelong passion that even took him across the Atlantic to Ireland to cheer from the stands.
For many years, Bill and his beloved wife, Romayne, were a fixture of Chicago city life. Together, they embraced the energy of the city-frequenting theaters, enjoying the local restaurant scene, and attending countless events. Following Romayne's passing, Bill showed his characteristic adaptability, moving to Indianapolis to live with his daughter Julie, son-in-law Dennis, and grandson Alex. Most recently, the family relocated to
St. Augustine, Florida, allowing Bill to spend his final chapter closer to his brothers and extended family.
In his later years, Bill found his greatest joy in the quiet, meaningful moments of "the everyday." He cherished his daily conversations with Julie and found peace in the simple companionship of his son, Terry, whether they were working on puzzles or simply napping side-by-side. He held a deep respect for his son-in-law, Dennis, valuing their time together and the unwavering support Dennis provided.
However, nothing brought a spark to Bill's eyes quite like his grandson, Alex. As his only grandchild, Alex was the light of Bill's life. Whether through spirited card games with his brothers or visits with his friend Jeanne Drew, Bill was surrounded by a "community of love" that made his final years truly profound.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, James and Harriett Rickhoff; his beloved wife, Romayne Rickhoff (née Goranson); and his brother, Jim Rickhoff.
He is survived by his children Terry Rickhoff and Julie (Dennis) Nalon, his grandson Alex Nalon, his brothers, Tom and Bob Rickhoff, and an extended family of many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
The family takes comfort in knowing that Bill is now reunited with Romayne and the loved ones who went before him. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit remains a guiding light to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family will hold a small gathering to celebrate Bill's life at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in
Hillside, IL, where he will be laid to rest alongside Romayne.
