Wladyslaw "Walter" Kowalczyk, 98, of Hartford, beloved husband of Krystyna (Torba) Kowalczyk, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at his home after a brief illness. Born in Barany, Poland on August 2, 1925, son of the late Josef and Josefina Kowalczyk, he immigrated to the United States after World War II at the age of 25.
Walter worked as a machinist for 38 years at Atlantic Aerospace, a division of Textron in Newington until his retirement in 1989. Walter enjoyed building things and working with his hands. A hard worker throughout his life, he never shared his struggles of growing up in Poland during a war but rather focused on the positive aspects of his life. He will be remembered as a generous and compassionate man who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, time spent with family, relaxing at his home, and enjoying a beautiful sunset over the bay in his beloved Cape Cod.
In his spare time, Walter enjoyed traveling especially to visit his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter in Cape Cod. He was a huge Boston sports fan and loved rooting for the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics. He also loved the going to watch the Hartford Whalers when they played in the Civic Center and following the UConn Men's and Women's Basketball teams. Most of all, Walter received the greatest joy from being with his family.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Rafal Kowalczyk and his wife Emily and their daughter, Madeline Kowalczyk all of Brewster, MA; and many other family members in Poland. He was predeceased by his first wife, Amelia (Jurewicz) Kowalczyk in 1985.
His family will receive friends on Friday, April 19, 4-7 p.m., at the Waszkelewicz South Green Memorial Home, 43 Wethersfield Ave., Hartford. Family and friends may gather on Saturday, April 20, 9:15 a.m., at the Waszkelewicz South Green Memorial Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m., at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Hartford. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. For online condolences please visit, www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
