Frank Russell Obituary

RUSSELL-Frank, widely known as a proud member of the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps for more than 50 years succumbed to liver cancer on February 3, 2006, 20 days short of his 79th birthday. Frank loved water sports including body surfing and rowing lifeguard rescue boats. His beach career included becoming the first lifeguard captain at Robert Moses State Park. For years, he and close friend George Marth oversaw lifeguard operations for all Long Island State Parks. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Hempstead and Mineola, he graduated from Mineola High School. Frank joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was stationed in Hawaii with his twin brother, George. Frank earned a B.S. from Springfield College. He was the wrestling coach at Columbia University and NYU and played semipro football for a Glen Cove based team. Despite his love for sports competition he chose to spend more time with family, and began teaching junior high science. Frank taught in the Smithtown, Plainview, and the BellmoreMerrick Secondary School Districts. Besides his family, lifeguarding was a great source of joy in Frank's life. He loved the ocean, the comradery among the guards and the interaction with the public. His lifelong active lifestyle and youthful exuberance inspired both students, and guards to remain physically fit. Referred to as "The Kid" even into his 50's, Frank competed in Masters Swimming, lifeguard tournaments, and running races. Frank was an active member of the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), and was awarded a lifetime membership. He loved the friendships made with the guards, including a special group, which continues to meet throughout the year, easily recognized by their baseball caps embroidered with BOGSAT. This "bunch of old guys sitting around talking," is predominately-retired teachers and lifeguards. Like many older people among us they have a great deal of wisdom to share with those having a shorter life experience. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Phelps Russell and Helen W. Russell; his twin brother, George P. Russell, Jr., his nephew, John Russell, and his first wife, Barbara E. Albert Russell. He raised his family in Northport. The family appreciates the support, kindness, and care of our friends, neighbors, and his fellow BOGSAT members. We thank the health care workers who helped Frank's final journey have the same dignity in which he led his life. He is survived by his wife, Jane; his sister, Alice Clark; brothers, Robert and Charlie who are all younger than their years. He will be greatly missed by his children: David, his wife, Pat; daughters, Debbie, and Laura and her husband, Chris Sams. He was very proud of his "stepchildren," Steve, Linda, and Robert Hunte; all who have served in the U.S. military and are Bellmore natives. He greatly loves his grandchildren, Dylan and Hannah, and looked forward to the birth of his new granddaughter later this month. We will rely on friends, the extended Russell-Hunte family, and the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps to continue the legacy of the youthful spirit, and joyful celebration of life which Frank blessed us with. Frank Russell repeatedly voiced his preference for a celebration of his life. He did not want a funeral home wake or a gathering to mourn his passing. In his honor, his family and friends will be hosting a memorial in June 2006 to celebrate his life, the friendships he held dear and enjoy the beach. The beach season will bring the formal launching of the lifeguard ocean dory, which has been purchased, and will be donated in his name. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

On the anniversary of Coach Russell's passing.

I remember taking Wrestling 101 at NYU Engineering School in University Heights, NYC in 1961. On the first day coach Russell was telling us how to build a strong body and wrestling was good for self defense no matter how big your opponent was. So he demonstrates by picking the biggest kid in the class, ME!

I mean I wasn't that big; 6ft 5 at 245lb. So I stand up and coach says, "come at me." Next thing I know, with a mild grunt, coach Russell lifts my size 15 EEEE's off the floor for a "take down". I "swear" somebody slammed the mat with a "1-2-3 your out!"

Embarrassing for a big strong 18 yr. old guy...but I was a gentle person, took it well and Coach Russell made his point with a bang"! :) As he helped me up from the mat, he said "good sport big man. Are you going out for Freshman Basketball. They have this amazing ball player Gene Fish"... and so I went to try out for BB.

Another thing that has stuck with me forever, small as it is. During calisthenics the coach said something along the lines of, Gentlemen, use your muscles..."and when you lean over the sink to brush your teeth, don't rest on your elbows. Use your muscles."

I thought of that every time I bent over the sink. It was so easy to do that...no big deal. I'm now 80 yrs old and I am sorry coach, I have to use my elbows...but at least you got me not to do it until I was in my 70's

Good Man, liked him very much

Frank's Memories live on.
He was our Phys. Ed teacher and wrestling coach at NYU's School of Engineering, University Heights, Bronx NY. 1961 to 1965. Unique in style and a gentleman.

I remember things he told us to this day, some 60 year later. His energy and military style teaching is unforgettable...and boy did he keep us fit.
Condolences to his family and all those lives Frank touched.

Continue to Rest in peace Coach.
Memory eternal.

Frank was one of my closest friends at the beach. He had a heart as big as a medicine ball and never let a friend down.

Frank, I went to Jones Beach when I was growing up in New York, but I'm not sure I ever truly appreciated it until I visited it again, with you, a few years ago. You brought the magic to life. Harry always talked about his great friendship with you. You are a hero.

I met Mr. Russell when I was in the 8th Grade at Merrick Avenue Junior High School (1975-1976). My last name was Lubrano at the time. I just wanted his family to know that he was one of the most funniest teachers I ever had. The class I happened to be in was quite a challenging group for him and he definitely had his hands full. He always had that sly smile though even though we made him crazy. Although I never received a grade higher than a 55 in his class, I still had a great time with him. Thanks for the very fond memories, Mr. Russell, you were one of the good guys! My thoughts to the family also. Keep those happy memories close to your heart and know he lived a wonderful life. Love, Alice Daley (formerly Lubrano)

...when he shall die take him

and cut him out in little stars,

and he will make the face of heaven so fine

that all the world will be in love with night

and pay no worship to the garish sun.

I will treasure the memories of sharing lifeguard duties with Frank - and riding hurricane induced waves together, all to many decades ago.

On behalf of the Glavin brothers, Frank was known by each of us in separate instances and sometimes all together. He was a kind and friendly man who you respected and could count on. He was a great Captain and it was a pleasure to work for him and share the love of the Corps and ocean. He will be missed but not forgotten.

As a boy in Freeport I knew my fathers cousins as my Uncles - Uncle George was the funny one, Uncle Charlie was (and is) the smart one, and Uncle Frank was the strong one. I wanted most to be like Frank. He was my Dad's hero and my role model.

MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU DAVE, AND YOUR FAMILY IN THIS TIME OF LOSS. THE WRITE UP ON YOUR DAD WAS INCREDIBLE AND I AM GLAD DARRYL RIDGLEY FORWARDED IT TO ME. I KNOW YOU WERE VERY PROUD OF HIM.

February 8, 2006

Frank was a class act. He welcomed me into the Russell family with open arms. I thank him for David and the rest of my new family. David and I will tell our soon-to-be-born daughter all about her special Grandpa Frank and attempt to tell her all his wonderful stories. He will be missed. Whenever I see the ocean I will remember him and all the great times we had at the beach and all the wonderful stories he told us about his over 50 years at the beach. I know he is up there in Heaven watching over us with a big smile on his face and his surfboard in his arms waiting to catch the next big wave. Good-bye Frank - Thanks for everything.

I would like to express our heartfelt sympathies to the Russell family. Having known Dave and Laura personally, and the rest of the family, I know that this is a very difficult time. Be strong and cherish the memories that your father has left you. Dave, I can still remember your description, of the first time you and your parents walked into our dorm room at IU, after I had "decorated" it with posters. That is something I'll always remember.

I met Frank as a Wantagh HS senior. Frank was a substitute teacher. The next year as I took my new hire test at Jones Beach, it was Frank who interveiwed me.

As the years went by, it was always George & Frank running the JB Corps. With my involvement on the Union Executive Board I got to know Frank more and more.

Frank always knew everyone by their first name. It showed how much he cared about each of us. I will forever rememeber Frank by his smile, he seemed to have it with him at all times.

Frank, because of you the beach is covered, time to rest.
