Gregory Schultz Obituary

Gregory Dale Schultz
Greg was born September 6, 1963, in Boulder, CO to Dale and Diane Schultz. He was the brother of Noreen (Charles) McElroy, Elaine (Patrick) McNamara, and Karen (Gary) Alexander. He was uncle to Timothy, Daniel, Colleen (Aubie Locke) and Dale McElroy (Kerry Burns), Jillian (Robert Locantore) and Michaela McNamara, and Rebecca, Caroline and Joshua Alexander. He was also the new great-uncle to Elise Locantore and Eliza Locke.
Greg was a 1981 graduate of Ledyard High School. He graduated from Fairfield University in 1985. He received his Masters of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology from Yale Divinity in 1995.
Greg began his career as a liturgical musician at a young age. He led many church choirs including Our Lady Of Lourdes (Gales Ferry), St Pius X (Fairfield), and Fairfield University. He continued his service professionally at Notre Dame (Durham) and Saint Agnes (Niantic). Greg served the community of Santa Clara University as a member of the campus ministry, where he served as Director of Liturgy and Music for 25 years. Along with his passion for leading music, Greg wrote countless pieces of music for his choirs, family, and special liturgical events. He scored plays for the theater department at SCU.
He was also passionate about serving those around him. He was a voice for the LGTBQ+ community. He counseled and supported many people along the way.
Greg was a friend, supporter and father figure to all. Greg was good for big laughs and big hugs, but could also be a quiet presence. He is missed by many.
Two Memorial Services are being held in Greg's memory. The first, on Saturday, October 15 at Edgerton Park in New Haven, CT at 10:00 a.m. The second, on Saturday, October 29 in the Mission Church at Santa Clara University, at 5:00 p.m.

To Greg's family and multitude of friends, how blessed we are to have had Greg in our lives.
I will hold dear my student and cantor at my wedding. So glad that I reunited at Santa Clara for a surprise reunited union. May we always remember his unconditional love and be an example for generations to come.

I am grateful to Greg for giving me the opportunity to sing in his choir at scu, even though i approached him as an alum & had only sung in my birth country of India. His deeply inspired - and inspiring - passion for `music as prayer´ has made a life changing impact on me. His laughter, his warm and hearty hug, his tambourine rings, his very presence are all part of my own spirit too. He lives on, in his music, in our voices as we continue to sing and remember and pray.

I haven´t seen or spoken with Greg in almost 30 years since I no longer participated in the trips to Appalachia and moved away from Durham in my early 20s, but I will always remember him as being a kind, gentle, gracious, and patient soul. This Earth has truly lost a try treasure and Heaven has gained an angel.

Greg Schultz was a profound believer, a gifted singer and musician, a powerful presence and devoted follower of Christ. Everything he did emanated from that love and acceptance. It was a blessing to have him as a student at Yale. What a great loss for us that he has left this world. May he rest in God's eternal peace.

I had the privilege of working with Greg in Dunne Hall during my time at SCU when I was a Resident Advisor. I also played bass guitar for a Mass that Campus Ministry held for Freshman Orientation. Enjoyed many late night student Masses that had beautiful music. I remember Greg as such a lively and positive person and cherish those memories.

My wife Beth sang at the 10 am Mission Mass for many years under Greg's direction - she loved it! And both of us enjoyed his expert music liturgies and spiritual direction at the SCU Alumni retreats at Villa Maria Del Mar. We will miss him. God bless Greg.

I knew Greg while he attended Yale Divinity School, especially in his role as part of the Marquand Chapel staff. I am not surprised to hear how much he has accomplished through his short lifetime. His gifts were generously served many. Truly he will be missed but has left the world a better place.
