Caroline Donhauser Obituary

DONHAUSER--Caroline R., died on August 9, 2025, in New Concord, New York. Born October 24, 1960, in New York City, she attended the Nightingale-Bamford School and Princeton University, where she received her B.A. in Comparative Literature and Russian Studies in 1982. Thereafter, she spent two years in Morocco, serving her country in the Peace Corps. She then attended Columbia University Law School, receiving her J.D. in 1989, and spent the following thirty years serving the public as an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, working on appeals, legislation, and alternatives to incarceration. She loved literature, the visual arts, the French language, cooking, and gardening. Those who knew her will remember her for, among other things, her loyalty, her kindness, her empathy, her sense of humor, her independent-mindedness, and her modesty. She is survived by Victor Barall, her life partner of many years, and her brother Peter L. Donhauser, sister-in-law Whitney W. Donhauser, and nieces, Amelia W. Donhauser and Cecile L. Donhauser. Donations in her memory may be made to the Goddard Riverside Community Center, the Children's Aid Society, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I knew Caroline at Princeton - at Colonial Club; she was a wonderful person - witty, charming, thoughtful and beautiful. I will remember her always.

Caroline was a quiet, super-smart person to whom we turned for reliable, valuable advice. She was kind and helpful, and always reasonable. In our work coummunity she will be missed terribly. She epitomized what a top-flight lawyer should be. My condolences to her family; this loss at an early age must be a terrible blow.

Remember well Caroline Donhauser, one year behind me at Nightingale - Bamford, as an energetic enthusiastic young lady - full of fun usually with a winning smile on her face. Gone much too young. . . Sympathy to her family. . .

What an unhappy surprise it was to learn of Caroline“s death. She was one of my closest friends at the time of our graduation in 1978 and our connection lasted into our early college years. Sadly, we lost touch with each other during college and I always wondered how she was. I thought that one day I would try to reconnect with her....I regret that I waited too long. May Caroline rest in peace.

I am so sad to hear about the passing of Caroline. She was so smart and funny. A truly beautiful person. I remember getting ready to throw away a very sad looking poinsettia and she brought it back to life. Condolences and prayers for Victor, family and friends. Rest in Peace dear friend.

To Caroline's loved ones.
I was so sad to hear that Caroline died. Many times over the years, at group meetings and one-on-one, we conferred on appellate matters. Caroline was never too busy to talk, was so insightful and always a pleasure to work with. May she rest in peace.
