Joseph Perez Obituary

Joseph D. Perez

October 17, 1942 - July 25, 2024

Joseph (Joe) Dominique Perez III died surrounded by his beloved family on Thursday, July 25, 2024 in Auburn, AL, after a sudden illness.

Born on October 17, 1942 in New Orleans, to Joseph and Elvira Perez, Joe was the oldest of three brothers. A true son of New Orleans, he loved spicy seafood, a good drink, live music, and to be around people he loved. Joe was the first member of the Perez family to graduate from college, earning his undergraduate degree from Loyola University in New Orleans, and his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Maryland.

"Dr. Perez" was a distinguished physicist who led Lockheed's Applied Physics Laboratory in Palo Alto, CA, doing research in both nuclear physics and plasma dynamics. Upon moving to Auburn University in 1988 as professor and head of the Physics Department, he focused on the earth's magnetic field. He contributed new techniques for visualizing and understanding the invisible particles that make up our solar system. After his retirement in January of this year, Joe continued his research as professor emeritus.

Joe was equally if not more dedicated to being a champion for students and colleagues. Among his proudest achievements is having helped students and faculty in the AU Physics Department accomplish their academic and research goals, as well as creating a collegial and cooperative environment in which they could thrive.

Joe played tennis for most of his life and for decades played USTA team tennis in Auburn. Later in life he enjoyed playing bridge with the Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club. Joe enjoyed any activity that could be turned into a competition.

Most important to Joe was his family. Married to Karni Rebecca Glanz in 1972, their sons Michael and Joshua grew up in Auburn. Previously married to Judith Rey Kemper, Joe's son, Stephen, and daughter, Carla, grew up in California. He has seven grandchildren, all of whom he adored. He taught his children how to throw and catch and how to think critically. Joe loved taking his family on long road trips to camp in leaky tents in America's national parks. He only submitted to foreign or air travel out of a dedication to visit his kids. His family will miss his incredible loyalty, along with his dedication to acting with honor and integrity.

A celebration of Joe Perez's life will be held August 18, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Congregation Beth Shalom in Auburn.

Auburn University is establishing the Joe Perez Endowment for Research Excellence. For more information, please contact Dr. Allen Landers, Chair, Auburn University Department of Physics, [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the endowment.

Joe was a man of great personal courage, of intellectual honesty, and a devoted husband and father. As a Jesuit Blue Jay classmate, his inner strengths and determination were displayed on a daily basis. He will be missed by many.
