Barbara Deal Obituary

Barbara Jane Mayo Deal passed away November 16, 2012 after waging a courageous battle for a year and a half against lung cancer.

Never complaining, always smiling and always armed with a barrage of questions for her oncologist, Barbara was the only child of Martha Jane Storm and Stanley Lewis Mayo of Oak Park and River Forest, Illinois. Born on April 5, 1941 in Oak Park, Barbara spent most of her life living in New Orleans, Louisiana before moving to Kingwood, Texas after Hurricane Katrina. She and her husband of 48 years Larry Edward Deal learned to love Kingwood but never lost their affection for New Orleans.

Barbara was a graduate of St. Martin's Episcopalian High School in New Orleans. She attended Whittier College in Whittier, California and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Institution Management from Kansas State University. She also completed an internship in Dietetics at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, Oklahoma City. Professionally, she worked at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and as a consulting dietician for Delachaise Nursing Home in New Orleans.

However, her favorite career was that of wife and mother. Her son Dr. Michael Mayo Deal was the light of her life. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.

Barbara is also survived by her "Number Two Son" Robert Yu-ren Lee—Michael's partner—and her two granddogs Kerry and Sam.

Larry, Michael and Robert wish to thank Dr. Samer S. Suki and the caring and thoughtful staff of Millennium Oncology, the professional and helpful staff of the ICU and IMU of Kingwood Medical Center, and the warm and loving team at Odyssey Hospice in Houston, Texas.

I will always treasure my memories of Mrs. Deal as I grew up across the street.

Michael, Robert and Mr. Deal (you'll always be "Mr. Deal") --

"Home" to me was pulling into our driveway and, invariably, seeing Mr. and Mrs. Deal sitting on their front steps talking with the neighbors (including my father). My thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

Best,
Todd Leopold

Dear Larry and Michael,
I went to St. Martin's and was in Barbara's class, and remember her well. We were a small class of 44 kids, and St. Martin's was a very happy time in my life. I will treasure my memories of Barbara as being a part of those happy times. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you both. She lives in our memories!

Even though it's true that Barbara is at peace, we are so sad because we'll miss her very much. Ed and I frequently recall the visits and phone calls during all of these many years of our friendship with Barbara and Larry. Lots of good times and memories that we shared and that's what we'll always remember.

Much sympathy to Larry, Michael and Robert.

Sue and Ed McCarthy and family.

I have very warm memories of Mrs. Barbara. I grew up next door to her on Durbridge Drive in New Orleans. I can still remember buying "Koolies" for a quarter from Michael and Mrs. Barbara on hot summer days. We would frequently gather in front of the Deal's house for an evening visit, which provided a great opportunity for everyone to catch up on neighborhood "current events." :)

I will always have very fond memories of those times and Mrs. Barbara and Mr. Larry will be a part of them. Yes...you will both be on the porch of your house on Durbridge Drive keeping a good eye on us kids.

With love & respect,

Patrick Connolly
