Betty Smith Obituary

Betty Lou Smith, 86, passed away on March 13, 2021 at her home in The Woodlands. She will always be remembered through her family and many friends for her presence in their lives. Betty came to Conroe from Oklahoma, having married the love of her life, F. David Smith, in 1955. Betty and David walked hand in hand during their travels through life. She was a beloved and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The "cheerleader and the football player" stayed in Conroe to raise their two daughters, Dabet and Renee. Betty loved learning and received her BS in Education with a minor in Spanish as well as continuing on to earn her Master's Degree in Counseling. She had a long and influential career as an Educator and counselor at Conroe High School. She will be remembered for making a difference in the lives of many young people. She was active during her life in the Conroe Bridge Club, Pan American Round Table as well as other Community Organizations, Book Clubs as well as the Methodist Church and St. James the Apostle Episcopal Church.

As an avid traveler and art lover, Betty instilled these adventuresome and appreciative traits in both her daughters and grandchildren. She loved the beach and their adventures to Mexico started a passion which turned into trips all around the world with her husband. Her fondness for learning led her to develop her "green thumb" into becoming a certified Master Gardener. With her gift and a passion for growing beautiful flowers and unusual plants, her unique home always reflected her expertise with its lovely green and year-around blooming central courtyard. She had a zest for life and a loving commitment to family and friends. As her daughters, we were blessed to learn many treasured lessons such as the value of life-long education and travel, the importance of family and friends.... as well as how to cook the perfect country-friend chicken and cream gravy and learning the tradition of making the best-ever Scrapple!

Betty was preceded in death by David, her husband of 51 years, her brothers Gene and Jack Compton, as well as her sister, Peggy Compton Durrett. She is survived by her two daughters, Dabet Smith and Renee Billings (Roger) as well as her three grandchildren, Rachel Saul, Harrison Saul (Kylee) and Zoe Neckar and her 2 great-grandchildren, Samantha Warner and Odin "Odie" Saul. She is also survived by numerous long-standing friends. She will be long remembered for her love of entertaining friends and family at home, her love of art and travel and her enthusiasm for helping others grown and learn.

As per her wish, Betty will have a private family graveside service at a later date in Cleveland, Oklahoma where her ashes will be lovingly placed with her husband's.
