December 28th would have been Chuck Lay's birthday. Sadly, the man behind the microphone, the broadcaster known across South Texas as "Buddy Holiday" passed away on September 8th, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Buddy may be gone, but he won't be forgotten, both in the hearts and minds of his family, and of his fans on the air.
Chuck's family would like to thank the many people who cared for him before his passing and participated in his memorial. Thanks to KSBJ 89.3 FM, the station that Buddy co-founded, and Barbara Bennatti, Joey K., Tim McDermott, board member Bob Ethington, and the rest of the staff, for their care, love and support, as well as the touching tribute they aired on the evening of Chuck's memorial. Thanks to Timberwood Nursing Home and Rehab for their seven years of care and Rosewood Funeral Home for coordinating the memorial service. Thanks to Kevan Wood, and Wayne Watson, and of course, thanks to Buddy's legions of fans. KSBJ will soon release a new mascot: "Buddy Bear" - so that Buddy's spirit can live on at the station.
Perhaps the most appropriate way to end this memorial is to paraphrase Chuck's own sign-off every day from KSBJ: "Thank you, Buddy...We love you!
