Daniel Paul Obituary

Daniel John Paul, Jr., known by most as Dan or Danny, passed away on May 24, 2018 after a long and valiant fight with atypical parkinsonism with multiple system atrophy. This terrible disease took many things from Dan, but was unable to break his spirit. Dan's character and love for life (and key lime pie) never wavered, and you never heard him complain. He remained in good spirits, surrounded by family, and cracked jokes until his last day, a very admirable feat.

Dan Paul was the only child of Daniel and Zula Paul, born on September 1, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The family later moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he grew up. He went on to attend his beloved Auburn University graduating with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

After enrolling at Auburn, Dan joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity. This is where he met the love of his life and wife of 53 years, Nancy Patricia Moses of Rome, Georgia, the fraternity's sweetheart. Dan had a strong presence on campus and it didn't take long for anyone he met to recognize his genuine character. He was elected Vice President of the student body and was named to the Spades honorary organization, the highest honor a student could receive at the University. Dan also played a role in helping desegregate the school during his senior year.

Upon graduating, Dan and Nancy married in 1964, and would go on to have four children together. He began working with ExxonMobil, where he remained for the rest of his 40-year-long career. This job took Dan's family on adventures all over the country, living in Louisiana, Texas, New Jersey, and California, before retuning back to Texas. Dan's last role was Vice President of SeaRiver Maritime in Houston. Those who worked with Dan viewed him as a mentor, friend, teacher and courageous leader. They will remember him for his ethics, decency, compassion and friendship.

When Dan retired in 2003, all sights were set on family. Being the quintessential family man that he was, it was only fitting for him to build a place that brought us together. In 2005, Dan purchased a ranch in the Central Texas Hill Country. Here, his passion for hunting and land conservation could combine with family bonding and making of priceless memories. Countless weekends were spent admiring sunsets among the hills, going on Jeep rides, playing games, and sitting around the fire, scotch-in-hand. It didn't matter what we were doing, there was nothing that made him happier than being with family.

In his life, Dan had many passions. He loved sailing, the ranch, hunting, traveling, reading, scotch and sweets... but he had no love greater than that for his family and friends. We will remember him as a husband, father, Papa, mentor, role model and friend to all. He was a man of immense strength and unbreakable character. He was kind and warm, caring and passionate, fair, generous and patient, all with a sense of humor.

While we are heartbroken to have lost the greatest man we know, we are thankful and blessed to be one of the many people whose lives he has touched. To the world he was our dad, but to our family, he was the world. Heaven received a true angel.

Preceded in death by his parents, Dan is survived by his wife, Nancy Paul, four children, Laura (George) Covert, Jennifer (Bill) Morey, Kevin Paul, and Warren (Julie) Paul; six grandchildren, Caroline Covert, Austin Covert, Nelms Morey, Grayson Morey, Blythe Morey and Wyatt Paul, all of Austin Texas; as well as many extended family and friends.

A special thanks to all of Dan's caretakers and friends, especially Mary Gil, Shanice Vincent, Paul Estrada, special nurse Sally Koen, and Hospice Austin. Each of you touched and helped both Dan and our family in ways you may never know. We are so grateful.

A great college friend and fraternity brother/roommate of Danny. Many good times and events with him during our years at Auburn University. I am glad to have found him in Austin during our retirement years and had the time to reacquaint our friendship during the last of his life. Nancy and the family are not the only ones that will miss Danny, but all will share in the glorious memory of having been a part of his life.

Dan was a wonderful person to know and a caring mentor to many. A harder worker I never knew. May the compassion he bestowed upon us all be with his family now as he is welcomed home. God bless you, Dan. Thank you for being such a special person to so many!

What a beautiful obituary. Caroline did an incredible job. So incredibly blessed to have known Dan and been able to spend time with him on so many occasions. Nolan and Forrest send their love, as well. Both are terribly sad but feel so fortunate for getting to know Dan. Love, Cathryn
