After a valiant 7-year fight against cancer, Kathleen June Marek passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening May 19, 2015, surrounded by her family.
She is preceded in death by her father, Bennett B. Patterson; mother, June Kathleen Patterson; and sister, Sandy Woods. Always with a bright bow in her hair, a radiant smile on her face and a story ready to tell, Kathy absolutely never met a stranger. She will be remembered forever for her sweet laughter, outstanding charisma, amazing cooking, strength of spirit and pure spunk. Kathy had a gift and appreciation for finding and sharing life's unique treasures. She loved to fish, usually taking home the best catch of the day. She loved to travel, visiting many places around the world throughout her life. She loved cooking, finding special recipes and creating countless gourmet meals for family and friends over the years. She loved to garden, taking great pride in her impressive annual tomato crop. She loved animals, as they loved her—an adoring dog, cat, turtle, squirrel, possum or raccoon could often be found closely at her heels. Meticulously dressed and radiant in heart, Kathy left a sparkle wherever she went. She attended Kincaid and Lamar High Schools in Houston and received her education at the University of Texas and Texas Christian University. Since 1976, she and her husband have owned and operated Marek Interior Landscape Design, Inc., providing interior landscaping for several restaurants and corporate buildings throughout Houston. For the past 20 years, they have donated their services every week to St Martha Catholic Church, where they have been long-time parishioners.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Wayne Marek; daughter, June Kathleen Pinarelli (husband: John); son, Todd Marek (wife: Jill); brother-in-law, Lynn C Woods, Jr; niece Kelly Brink (husband: Richard, daughter: Lindsay); nephew Christopher Woods (wife: Carla, son: Nicholas); niece Stephanie Neverdowski (husband: Chuck, son: Chuck, Jr, daughter: Zoe); cousin Ellie Bills (husband: Don). The family would like to thank all of the staff at MD Anderson and Kingwood Medical Center for their outstanding, loving care.
Services will be held at St Martha Catholic Church in Kingwood on Saturday, May 23 with a visitation at 11am, followed by a funeral mass at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, the Marek family asks that you make a contribution to the St Martha Capital Campaign Fund (stmartha.com), 4301 Woodbridge Pkwy, Porter, Texas 77365. "Aunt Kathy," as I knew her, was such a bright, warm spirit at many family functions! I can still hear her contagious laugh and see her festive bows. My heart goes out to Wayne, June, Todd, and the Woods family.
