Sandra F. Bullinger

Sandra F. Bullinger, 78, passed away on January 5, 2024. "Sandy" was born on September 5, 1945, in Chester, VA. She attended Thomas Dale High School followed by Longwood College where she made many wonderful memories before graduating in 1967. She moved to Virginia Beach (and later to Chesapeake) where she began a 40-year career with Virginia Beach City Public Schools. She was a history teacher for 25 years at several area schools, including Plaza Junior High, Bayside High, and Brandon Junior High. In 1992 she earned her master's degree from Old Dominion University and moved from the classroom to the guidance department where she worked as a Guidance Counselor at Bayside High School until her retirement in 2007. Sandy was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. Throughout her life she was an avid reader, rarely without several books in progress. She loved her cats and watching football, especially the VT Hokies. Sandy was always ready with a joke or story to share and she had an amazing memory. She was a long-time member of the Great Bridge Swim and Racquet Club where she spent many fun summers poolside. After retiring, she spent several years as a volunteer at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Her wit, intelligence and resilience were trademark characteristics to all who knew and loved her. Sandy will be dearly missed, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and the enduring impact of her years spent nurturing minds and hearts. She was predeceased by her parents and sister. She is survived by her daughters Cari Matteson and Abby Bullinger, son-in law Michael Matteson and the light of her life in recent years, granddaughter Ellie Matteson, as well as her brother, brother-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. A church service will be held in Sandy's memory at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on January 17th, 2024, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks any donations to be made to the local chapter of the SPCA or the Chesapeake Humane Society.
