Peter Budlong Obituary
April 8, 1943 - April 19, 2023
Peter Charles Budlong, 80, died on April 19, 2023 in his home of El Cerrito, California. Diagnosed with end-stage liver disease and macular degeneration a year before, he rallied by listening to historical audiobooks and Boston Red Sox games as well as reminiscing with friends and family.
Peter grew up in Wethersfield, Connecticut. In high school, he was voted "Most Argumentative" and "Deepest Blusher." He was the first in his family to attend college at the University of Hartford where he played college baseball. He would later go on to play semi-pro.
Steadfast to his belief system, Peter dedicated his life to bettering those around him. While in the Army Reserves, he risked his well-being by refusing to carry a weapon when told to harm protestors.
As a representative at the Commission for Human Rights & Opportunities, Peter investigated discrimination in employment and worked on getting the first Black Santa Claus hired in a major department store in Connecticut.
Peter worked at New Bridge Foundation, a substance abuse treatment program, for 37 years where he got people into the program and often out of jail. He helped create a Detoxification Facility in Alameda County.
Faith anchored his life, including his path towards sobriety. Peter was proud to have nine years sober when he died.
Peter is a hero to many of his family, friends, and larger community. He was known for his enthusiasm when expressing someone's name and gave many nicknames. Those who survive him include his wife, "Mazanne" Suzanne, his son, "The Best Boy" Kyle, his daughter, "Contrary Morisa" Marisa, his brother, "My Brother Mike" C. Michael Budlong, his sister, "My Sister Sue" Susan Budlong Cole, and many family members and friends.
The family is grateful to Kaiser Oakland Hospice, Karin "The Katie" Bliman, and Lon Poole for their day to day support.
A vigil is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30pm on April 26, 2023. The funeral is scheduled for 11am on April 27, 2023. Both will be held at Saint Mary Magdalen Church at 2005 Berryman St. Berkeley, California 94709. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the New Bridge Foundation in memory of Peter.

Peter was a stellar man who saved countless lives. He got to know addicts on the street, he really cared and it showed, he talked many into treatment, many of whom went on to lead stellar lives of their own. Peter made a difference. I applaud Peter Budlong. He bought himself a E-ticket to heaven.

Kathy and I are very sorry to hear this news. I lost touch with Peter after we moved to central CA, but have fond memories of playing adult rec softball with Peter and the gang. RIP Peter.

I worked with Peter when I was employed by the Federal Courts. He was always supportive and an advocate for the clients. I valued his professionalism and his friendship. Rest in Peace.
