DR. LUCY MING SHIH CHANG

A pioneering biochemist and beloved family figure, passed away on November 13, 2023. Born on August 20, 1942, in China, to Timothy Y.N. Chang and Florence I.C. Chang, Lucy's journey was marked by brilliance, dedication, and profound generosity.

Lucy's academic journey began at Case Western Reserve University, where she earned a B.S. in Chemistry in 1964, followed by a P.H.D. in Biochemistry from Indiana University in 1968. Her passion for biochemistry led her to the University of Kentucky for postdoctoral research, laying the foundation for a remarkable career.

In 1972, Lucy embarked on her professional journey as an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut. Her expertise and leadership skills flourished, leading her to become a Professor and later Chairman of Biochemistry at the Armed Forces Medical School. But perhaps her most significant professional achievement was the founding of Supertechs in Rockville, MD, with her life partner, Dr. Fred Bollum. Together, they developed numerous patents of co-enzymes, significantly advancing pharmaceutical production. Supertechs stands today as a testament to their collaborative genius and dedication.

Lucy's personal life was as rich and fulfilling as her professional one. Her relationship with Dr. Fred Bollum, and their partnership of 43 years was a beacon of love, support, and shared intellectual pursuits. They enjoyed traveling and unwinding at their beach house on the Chesapeake, creating memories that lasted a lifetime. Lucy also found solace in knitting, a hobby that reflected her meticulous nature and patience.

Beyond her professional accolades, Lucy was a pillar of strength and support in her family. She was a caring sister to Jane, David, Anthony, Anne, and Alexander, and a generous aunt to six nieces and nephews, often extending both her financial and unconditional mentoring support for their education. Her generosity knew no bounds, as evidenced by her numerous philanthropic contributions and personal acts of kindness.

Lucy's later years were marked by her unwavering dedication to her partner, Fred, especially after his stroke. She cared for him until his passing with the same commitment and love that she applied to every aspect of her life. Her health may have declined during this period, but her spirit and resilience remained unbroken.

Dr. Lucy Ming Shih Chang's legacy is not merely in the patents she created or the students she taught; it is deeply rooted in the lives she touched, the family she nurtured, and the community she enriched. She will be remembered as a brilliant mind, a devoted partner, a supportive sister, and a benevolent spirit. Her legacy will continue to inspire, and her memory will forever be cherished.
