ARVIN WILLIAMS Obituary

Published by Bliley's Funeral Home Central Chapel from Apr. 12 to Apr. 14, 2013.
WILLIAMS, Colonel Arvin Samuel, retired USAF, 92, of Richmond, (formerly of Front Royal, Va.) passed away April 10, 2013. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Mauck Williams; parents, Irvin P. and Cleo B. Williams; four brothers and a sister. He is survived by his daughter, Lucy W. Hooper and her husband, Gary; grandson, John Randolph; and a sister, Ruth W. Claus. Arvin was born and raised in the southwestern Virginia coal country, in Wise County. He graduated in 1942 from Milligan College, in Tennessee, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. While at Milligan, Arvin played fullback and was co-captain of the football team. Upon graduation, he began teaching Biology and Chemistry and coached varsity football and basketball at Norton High School. In August of 1942, he had enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve and was called to active duty in March 1943. Upon receiving his Pilot's Wings in 1944, he piloted B-17 and B-29 bombers during World War II; having served throughout the U.S. and Europe. He eventually achieved the rank of Colonel in the USAF Reserves, while serving as liaison officer for the United States Air Force Academy for Virginia and West Virginia. While serving as liaison officer, he participated in two active tours at the Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. He obtained his Master of Arts Degree in Education from George Washington University in 1967, having also studied at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. Arvin returned to education in 1947, where he began teaching mathematics at Randolph-Macon Academy, in Front Royal, Va., where he also coached varsity football and swimming. In 1955, he was named Athletic Director and added varsity wrestling to his coach resume. Working his way through the administrative ranks at R-MA, Arvin was named president of the school in 1969, the position which he held until 1978. Upon leaving R-MA, he eventually decided he was not quite ready for retirement and went to work with AGT Communications Group, working with computer graphics for the Shenandoah Press. At age 79, Arvin finally decided it was time to start taking it a bit easier. Having been widowed for some time, he relocated to Richmond, Va. in 1980, to be closer to his family. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 14, 2013 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, Va. 23230. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 11 a.m. in Boggs Chapel at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Emma and Arvin Williams Scholarship Fund at Randolph-Macon Academy, 200 Academy Drive, Front Royal, Va. 22630.

While I attended RMA my father was stationed in VietNam and Turkey, Col Williams took care of me like a father would and managed with great restraint to keep me from getting expelled and for his kindness and help I will forever be grateful. RIP Colonel you certainly deserve it. Tom Mildren 1968

Dear Lucy and family,
Mom, Jeannine and I did not learn of Uncle Arvin's death until reading the obituary. We are so sorry to have missed the service and so sorry for your loss. We all remember him as an inspiration and a kind, good man, loving and devoted husband and just a joy to be around. Dad thought so much of Uncle Arvin. We know you will miss him terribly.

With our heartfelt and deepest sympathy,
Teresa and Kevin Maley, Ruckersville, VA

Lucy,
I regret that I was out of town and unable to attend your father's memorial service. I truly wanted to be there. He was a significant part of my developing youth, even before I attended RMA. As a 6 yr. old, Dad set me up to take private swimming lesson's from your father and our relationship grew from there. He was just as proud of you as you were of him and I know you will miss him. Your parents were both genuinely fine people and to me and to my parents they were most special. I trust and hope our paths will cross soon, Kay joins me in this note of sympathy.

Col Williams was one of those special people in my life who I will always remember. I think he could see past the foolish hard headed teenager and see inside. He probably prevented my early departure from RMA. Class of 68. I still remember a couple of great dinners I was invited to in his home on campus with Mrs Williams and the lovely Lucy. With my family serving in Europe it was special to feel like I had a local family. RIP

Looking back on my life as a cadet, there are many teachers and mentors that influenced my life. But none as much as Col. Willams. Thank you for your service and commitment to RMA. you will be missed.

Col Williams was a life long friend our our family. My father, Franky Smith, Class of 53, considered him to be one of his closest life long friends and mentors. We knew Col Williams from the time we were a small children during visits to Front Royal. When it came time for my brother and I to attend the Academy in 1974, he had an open welcome for us. He would always get exicited knowing that when we would return from the Eastern Shore after a holiday that we would come bringing seafood. We continued this practice even after I graduated in 1977. Our sympathy is with Lucy and her family. He was a great man and will be missed by all of the lives he touched.

Col. Williams intervied me in the RMA lobby lounge in 1965, with my mom sitting close by. It went well, and I spent the next five years attending RMA. Col. Williams was a real gentleman, and was always kind to me. I'll always have fond memories of him, and the positive impact he had on my life.

Remember being at RMA with COL Williams for five great years. He was a man, soldier and friend to many whose lives he affected. To Lucy and family our deepest sympathy.
