Laura J. Reed, beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away in hospice care on November 29, 2023 at the age of 66 after a long battle with cancer.
Laura was born in Denver, Colorado and was a graduate of the University of Colorado. She then attended Indiana State University where she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Psychology in 1986. While in graduate school, she served as an intern at the Bingham Child Guidance Center, a clinic of the University of Louisville Medical School Department of Psychiatry. This began her life-long devotion to the mental health of children and teens. Upon completion of her graduate school course work, Laura was named Psychologist and Clinician at the Bingham Center, and in 1995, she was appointed Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry. Soon thereafter, Laura went into private practice, as well as working as a counselor at Summit Academy, a Louisville school devoted to children and teens with learning differences. Laura continued her professional practice until her retirement in 2018. She was much loved by many of the young people she encountered and developed lifelong relationships with several of her clients.
Laura was predeceased by her father, William W. Reed and her adoptive mother, Vivian J. Duvall. Laura is survived by her devoted husband, Patrick B. McGinnis, his children, grandchildren, and extended family; her loving daughter, Calley Heffer and her wife, Lillian Mehran; and her caring brothers, Donald C. Reed and Charles L. Reed and their families. She will also be survived by Baby Mehran, who will be arriving to this world later this year.
Laura made many friends during her life, and she will be missed by them all. Special thanks are given to Barbara Waldrop and Karen Head who assisted in caregiving for Laura. Thank you also to all her golf buddies at Shadow Wood Country Club in Estero, Florida, who were a constant source of encouragement and laughter during her almost 3-year illness. Lastly, gratitude is extended to her brother Charlie, who was an amazing caregiver for Laura during the long hospital stay that ended with her passing.
Due to travel restrictions imposed by Baby Mehran, Laura's family plans to have a celebration of her life on May 18, 2024. Details on her celebration will be shared at a later date.
Laura was a generous person. In lieu of flowers, her family request that donations be made to one her favorite charities: American Civil Liberties Union Louisville Public Media Pro Publica
Arrangements under the direction of Pearson's, "Where Louisville Goes to Remember."

Laura Reed was my counselor from 2000 to when she retired in 2018. She was an amazing person and helped me in so many ways I can´t even begin to explain. She will be dearly missed.

Dearest Laura,
What a loss to the world - of your Wisdom, your sense of humor, your ability to cut to the chase and see the ultimate truth of any situation, and then have the courage to lovingly tell others what they most needed to hear. Your brave and relentless fight to stay around as long as possible has been an inspiration to all who know you. Your family was Blessed to have you in their lives, as were I and all of your friends and professional colleagues. You are, and have been, in my thoughts frequently, WWLS (What Would Laura Say), and in my heart.
Love and Blessings to you and your family. Carol Held
