Obituary
BEVERLY - Richard Joseph Galante, known to his family and friends as Dick, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2023. To know him was to know his endless curiosity, intelligence and hard working nature. He was self-taught in numerous areas, unpretentious, and fiercely independent. Dick was consistently undeterred by hardship and adversity.
He was born on August 4, 1941, in Boston, MA to Frank Ovidio Galante and Rosalie Salviati Galante. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1959 and went on to study at Northeastern University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He later returned to Northeastern to earn his MBA.
In the early 1980's, Dick, along with two business partners, helped found Product Resources, Inc. (PRI), a contract engineering and manufacturing company. Following PRI, he had a long and successful career in mechanical engineering. Before his retirement, he worked for companies related to thermography, lighting design, and critical power solutions used in commercial and military applications.
Dick first met his future wife Jocelyn Mann (Joddy) at Melrose High School, but it was some years later before they reconnected and started dating. They married on April 30, 1967 and went on to have three children, Julie Galante Hussman, Richard Loring Galante (Rick) and Ben James Galante. Dick and Joddy raised their children in Wakefield, MA before they retired to
Salisbury, MA.
Dick was passionate about fixing and building things. He was a true craftsman and life-long learner who enjoyed wood working, antique collecting, antique cars, and building balsa wood model airplanes. He restored the 1938 Ford that he and Joddy dated in and maintained it for decades thereafter.
He loved music, especially Johnny Cash, and old rock and roll. He was great at engaging with children and loved the holidays, especially Christmas. He restored and cherished the 1835 brick farm house in Hebron, New Hampshire where he and his family spent many summers and weekends. He also enjoyed watching old movies, swimming at Newfound Lake, and eating good food, especially dishes associated with his Italian heritage. He was a dyed-in-the-wool Patriots fan and loved rooting for his team with his son Rick.
Dick was predeceased by his son, Rick Galante, his brothers, Robert Galante and Lenny Galante, his sister Carol Hoover, and his dear friend Chuck Johnson. He is survived by his wife Jocelyn Galante, his daughter Julie Hussman of Maryland, and her husband Tim, his son Ben Galante of California and his wife Jenny, his sisters Elaine Bond and Dolores Sykes of Florida, and grandchildren Dominick, Sophia, Lily, and Finn.
