Curtis Maxey Obituary

Curtis Neal Maxey, 59, of Porter, was called home to Glory by our loving Lord on the morning of Monday, August 24, 2015. As he stated many times, he did not want to leave, but he was ready to go. He had full confidence in knowing that he would see Jesus face to face when his journey on this earth ended.

Curtis was born on April 18, 1956 to Carl and Augusta (Dawtye) Maxey in Austin, Texas. A proud Texan, he grew up in Austin, Irving, and Pasadena; attended Sam Rayburn High School, San Jacinto College, and graduated from University of Houston-Clear Lake with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He put his degree to good use by making a career out of banking. He worked for many banks in his lifetime, including Channelview Bank, Prime Bank, Wells Fargo, Main Street Bank, and The Mint National Bank.

In 1982, he became a member of the North Channel Kiwanis Club. Having perfect attendance from the beginning, he served as President twice. He also served as Lieutenant Governor for Division 28 and as treasurer of the Texas Oklahoma Past Lieutenant Governors Association. After his years in the North Channel Kiwanis Club, he transferred to the Kiwanis Club of Kingwood. During his years in Kingwood, he served as the AKTION Club District Administrator for the Texas Oklahoma District, firmly establishing the KIWANIS program for adults living with disabilities. He grew the Aktion Club program from one club to eleven, and through his tireless efforts he received the Vision award from the Texas Department of Aging and Disability on behalf of the TX/OK District. His involvement with the Aktion Club and The Village Learning & Achievement Center brought Curtis great joy. Curtis also enjoyed serving in many positions in the churches he attended in Pasadena and considered Brothers Andy Kite, Denny Autry, and Dr. Ron Lyle to be influential in his spiritual life.

An avid fisherman, Curtis delighted in spending time on the water in Sargent, TX. When he wasn't casting from his boat, he enjoyed teaching his grandchildren to fish from the pier of his beloved creek house. A long time season ticket holder of the Astros, Texans, and UH Cougars, he spent many a season cheering on his favorite teams and loved giving his sons and brother-in-law a hard time about their loyalty to the Cowboys. Although he would have considered himself a simple "collector" of many things, he had a hard time letting go of anything that he found of sentimental value.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Kim; his children: daughter Jessica Melott and son-in-law Scott of New Braunfels, daughter Patty Jo Sheets and son-in-law Wes of Chicago, son Barlow of New Braunfels and his girlfriend Brooke, son and daughter-in-law Kirk and Alyssa Doxey of Kingwood; mother-in-law and father-in-law Johnie and Lynn Davidson of Camilla Cove; brother, Doug Maxey and sister -in- law Janet; sister Carole and brother-in -law Ernest Lopez of Pasadena, sister Nancy and brother-in-law Donny Taylor of Pearland; beloved granddaughters Jo Jo, Lucy, Ruthie, Lilly, and Saroja Melott; grandson Kaden Doxey; mother of his children and dear friend Rhonda Allen of New Braunfels; several nieces and nephews; many cousins; a host of great friends; and one or two people that didn't care much about him.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00-8:00pm on Friday, August 28th at Kingwood Funeral Home. To honor Curtis' loyal and fun-loving spirit, the family requests that you wear Houston Texans, Houston Astros, UH Cougars, or some sort of fishing attire to the visitation. A celebration of his life will be held at Kingwood Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 29, 2015.

The family suggests memorials be made to: Kiwanis Texas/Oklahoma Foundation, 624 Six Flags Drive, Suite 265, Arlington, TX 76011-6342; Village Learning & Achievement Center, 3819 Plum Valley Drive, Kingwood, TX 77339, or Memorial Hermann Fund, Attn: Dr. Amato, 929 Gessner, Houston, TX 77024.

Kim, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I will never forget how much my banking family meant to me when I lost my son Robert. Besides my immediate family, I would never had made it through without your love and friendship. Curtis was such a great person to work with also, always had a smile on his face. He will be missed.

I'm so sorry I was unable to attend Curtis' Memorial Service, as I had eye surgery and was unable to travel. Curtis was a dear friend in high school and college. We kept up a little bit the last few years on facebook which I am grateful for because I got to see what a wonderful life and family he enjoyed. God bless all of you as you mourn the loss of a great man! Grateful for his love of Christ and to know we'll see him again. Much sympathy, Debbie Clemons

Curtis touched the lives of many people! I am happy to say that I have had to pleasure of knowing him for the last decade or more. Generous with his time and talents he lived a life of love for others that our Savior urged us to follow. I will miss his jovial "Joke of the day" banter with me at the Kiwanis meetings as well as sitting next to him at an Astro game analyzing the players Thanks for the memories "Lefty"!

This is one of those times in life when you stop...a distant memory is recalled...and you remember friends and days long gone. I shared those bustling, anxiety-ridden, hopeful, fearful, teenage years with Curtis at Sam Rayburn High School.

Ernest Hemingways said, "Every man's life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another."

After having the priviledge of seeing the multitude of photos shared, it is clear, Curtis was well-loved and knew how to love, in return. I do not believe there is any greater accomplishment in life.

Although Hemingway was a good writer, it occurs to me a more appropriate quote is found in Matthew 10:32-33. "32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven

My sincere condolences to the Maxey and extended family.

Curtis, if you'll keep Jesus company until I get there, I'll see you when I arrive!

My condolences to your family. I worked with Curtis at Main Street Bank for several years. He was always joking around and so nice to work with and always had a smile on his face even the days when you knew he wasn't feeling very well. We always talked Texans football and I was grateful he even shared his season tickets once for my son and I to attend a game. I'm happy he is now resting and no longer in pain. And I'm sure he'll be cheering along with us Texans and Astros fans. Rest in peace Curtis.

Kim,

May you and the family have the comfort and peace our Lord promised to those who love him. I'm sorry I never got the chance to "wet a line" with Curtis, but we'll be thinking of him when Renee and I go fishing. I know he'll be wishing us luck!

Curtis, you were the best boss anyone could ask for and you stood by us through thick and thin. Not only that - you were also a great friend. I'm glad for the time we worked together and I have so many wonderful memories to look back on. I hope you are fishing in the big lake up there and catch plenty of those speckled (or was it spotted) trout (or was it bass)? I chuckle every time I think about that fish lesson you tried to teach me. May you rest in peace Curtis; I miss you so much.
