Emma D. Nivins Ammons Simmons was born Sunday, April 3, 1921 in Round Oak, GA; the fifth of nine children born to the late Mr. John F. Nivins and Mrs. Addie J. Hardwick Nivins. She received her education in the Georgia Public School System and graduated from Columbus Evening High School in Columbus, OH. She attended business classes at Bliss College in Columbus, OH. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church since 1946 and was active in many church organizations. Preceded in death by husband Richard E. Ammons, and second husband Anthony Simmons, children Richard E. Ammons, Jr. and Mary D. Ammons, stepsons Alan Michael Simmons and George A. Simmons, brothers Willie J. Nivins, Joe Frank Nivins, Otis Benjamin Nivins, Thomas J. Nivins, John G. Nivins, and Reuben Louis Nivins, sisters Mary G. Nivins Davis and Addie Mae Nivins Smith, and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Survived by daughter, Katherine S. Fitzgerald; stepdaughters, Sunday Simmons of Bronx, NY and Paulette Simmons of Chicago, IL; daughter-in-law, Floyda M. Ammons; grandchildren, Michael A. Fitzgerald, Richard E. Taylor of Los Angeles, CA, Tina R. Fitzgerald, Jamel C. Ammons, Terri L. Mitchell and Derrick E. Ammons of Columbus, OH; great-grandchildren, Aja D. Mitchell, Karlos C. Mattox, Sr. (Antoinette), Khara T. Fitzgerald, Israel M. Mitchell (Elem), Kelsey L. Fitzgerald, Jordan M. Mitchell and Kyndal Fitzgerald; 11 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Celebration of Life 11AM Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 2021 Cleveland Ave, where her family will receive friends from 10AM until time of service. Her Celebration of Life Service will be streamed online to allow family and friends to honor Emma together at a distance. Interment Green Lawn Cemetery. Emma D. Nivins Ammons Simmons was the best mother I could have wished for. An excellent cook, she saw that I was well nourished. A local model, she saw that I learned proper comportment. A kind and gentle woman, she taught me the Golden Rule. But she was nobody's pushover; she gave as good as she got! And I try to emulate her in that respect, too. Raised as a Christian, she saw that I was so raised as well. And as a Christian, I know she rests in Heavenly comfort in the arms of Jesus Christ. Rest in peace, Best. Mother. Ever!

Mother Emma D. Ammons Simmons and I shared this favorite scripture along with our Love for God, Family and Church. Mother Emma D. was LOVE in Action 24/7/365 days a year. "Mission was her other name" because she was always Taking Care of or doing for someone. I could never understand how she could get everywhere and Do everything and not Drive a car; but she did it and she did it exceptionally well. Thank You God for the Life and Legacy of Mother Emma D. Ammons Simmons. Thank You Mother Emma D. for impacting my life with Love & Support in everything I did... Her children arise up and call her BLESSED. I'll see you in the morning Mother Emma D.

I want to thank my Granny for teaching me Jesus! Watching her on her knees for so long each night, I often wondered, why has she got so much to say to God? Now I know it was all the names of all her children and loved ones!
