Alfred "Lee" Askins, 79, of Evansville, passed away Thursday, November 6, 2025 at Brickyard Healthcare-Brentwood Care Center. He was born September 16, 1946 in Tell City, IN to the late Lulu (Askins) Townsend.
Lee was a graduate of Reitz High School where he played in the band. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War serving in the infantry in his first tour and as a helicopter pilot during his second tour. Lee was discharged from the U.S. Army as a Major. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1114. Lee and Toni were lifetime and founding members of Rolling Thunder. He went on the Honor Flight of Southern Indiana #18 May 3, 2025. Lee was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in the County where he and his wife received the Bruté Award and was a Eucharistic minister. Lee volunteered for hospice where he would visit shut-ins.
Lee is survived by his wife, Toni (Stricker) Askins; daughters, Nicole Askins and Andrea Askins; grandchildren, Samantha Jo Jensen, Philip Askins, Hannah Christensen and Caster Christensen; brother, Michael (Anne) Townsend; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his mother, Lee was preceded in death by his stepfather, William R. Townsend, Sr.; and brother, William "Rick" Townsend, Jr.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 N. First Ave., Evansville with a Memorial service at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vanderburgh County, 6202 W. St. Joseph Rd., Evansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Father Gene Schroeder officiating.
Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in the County at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lee and Toni Askins Endowment for Physical Education at St. Joseph Church in the County, 6202 W. St. Joseph Rd., Evansville, IN 47720 or the VFW Post 1114, 110 N. Wabash Avenue of Flags, Evansville, IN 47712.
The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of Brentwood for their kind and compassionate care of Lee.
