Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sproles Family Funeral Home - New Castle on Aug. 25, 2024.
Alice Marie Weingard, 83, left this earth from Miltonvale, Kansas on Friday, August 23, 2024 to finish her birthday celebration in Heaven.
She was born at home on August 23, 1941 in Guitonville, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Allan Amos Whitton and Frances Rebekah (Bortzer) Whitton.
Alice was a 1959 graduate of East Forest High. She obtained a BA in Elementary Education from Clarion University in Clarion, PA. She went on to pursue a Master's degree in Elementary Education with a minor in American History at Penn State University, University Park, PA. Alice began her teaching career in the 6th grade classroom with the public school district in Warren, PA.
She met the love of her life, Francis, through a mutual connection in the Free Methodist Conference. Alice and Francis were married on August 9, 1969 at the Free Methodist Church in Marienville, PA. They began their married life at God's Bible School and College in Cincinnati, Ohio where Alice continued her teaching career.
As children were added to the family, she became a stay at home mom in Guitonville, where she was a homesteader before it was popular. Her life was filled with sewing, gardening and preserving the harvest to feed her growing family.
Since education was important to her, when their church (Marienville Church of the Bible Covenant) began a school, she sent her two oldest children opening day. Alice joined the teaching staff two years later and continued teaching at FCCA until 1986.
In 1989, the family moved to God's Bible School where she taught history and elementary education classes and worked as the librarian. The following summer, she began a Master's degree in Library Science at Clarion University. Alice taught at GBS until 1999 when she and her husband moved to Colorado. While there, she was a consultant for hundreds of homeschoolers for Vision Homeschool.
In 2007, Alice and Francis moved to Allegheny Wesleyan College in Salem, Ohio, where she worked as librarian and teacher and assisted with the school accreditation process.
She moved to Bedford, Indiana in 2017, though she was 76 years old, she couldn't just sit around. Alice finished her fifty year teaching career at Stone City Christian Academy in the 5th and 6th grade classroom.
Alice was an avid reader, book collector, and American History buff. Her personal library contained thousands of books with a strong emphasis on children's literature.
Those left to cherish Alice's memory include her five daughters, Dixie Lee (Jeff) Epp of Noblesville, IN, Holly Marie (Tim) Miller of Spencer, IN, Heidi JoAnn (Mike) Echols of Bedford, IN, Jodi Lynn (James) Randel of Miltonvale, KS, and Lyndi Sue (Matthew) Booth of Sugarcreek, OH. Her daughters blessed Alice and Francis Weingard with 21 grandchildren, Curtis (Betsy) Epp, Samuel (Lindsey) Epp, Alexander (Rebecca) Epp, Briana, and Julissa Epp, Joshua (Hannah) Miller, Caleb (Taylanee) Miller, David (Tiffany) Miller, Melody (Nathaniel) Hobleman, Moriah (John) Hatfield, Connor Echols, Josiah, Jeralyn, Jeshanah, Jesherlah, Joashleiah, Jerabeth, and Jonas Randel, Silas, Jathniel, and Tirzah Booth; six great-grandchildren with two on the way, Jacob, Sarah, and Janessa Miller, and Adalee, Ezra, and Matthew Epp; four sisters, Elmira Elizabeth Whitton of Guitonville, PA, Rose Mary (Henry) Schill of Shippenville, PA, Sandra Singleton of Titusville, PA, and Susan Rebekah Whitton of Guitonville, PA, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Francis LeRoy Weingard; her siblings, infant twins - Calvin and Caroline Whitton, Jacob Allan Whitton, Edgar Eugene Whitton, and Lloyd R. Bortzer.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, August 30, 2024, at Community Methodist Church in Marienville, PA, with Rev. Nathan Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at Guitonville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from noon until the time of the service on Friday.
