Angelo Di Tata, age 90, longtime band director of music at the former Estee Junior High School of the Gloversville Enlarged School District, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, peacefully with the devotion and love of his wife Carol Ann by his side at his home in Florida.
Born in Amsterdam, NY on September 25, 1932, Angelo was the son of the late Louis and Marian (DeAngelis) Di Tata. Angelo's parents relocated the family to Little Falls, NY in the early 1930's where his father owned and operated the former "Charlies Shoe Shop" on Ann Street for many years. Angelo's father was a local musician who taught all of his four children how to play instruments at an early age and was proud of all of their musical abilities. As a youngster, Angelo performed at many local venues and musical competitions where he won awards.
Mr. Di Tata graduated from Little Falls High School in 1950. He reported for duty in the US Army at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas in 1952. While in the Army, his abilities as a clarinet player earned him membership into the U.S. Army Band as Sergeant. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Upon his honorable discharge in 1954, he pursued his education at SUNY Fredonia, graduating with a BS in Music Education and a MA in Music. This was a big accomplishment at the time. Angelo was the first child of his Italian immigrant parents and family to go to college and graduate. He would also meet the love of his life, Carol Ann, and raise four children.
Angelo began his teaching career at Estee Junior High School in 1958, retiring in 1991, and relocating to Crestview, Florida in 2001. Angelo played in many local bands throughout his lifetime. He played his clarinet for decades in the Gloversville Civic Band and Johnstown Community Band. He always enjoyed the comradery of fellow musicians and their families in these bands, especially with longtime friends Norman and Doris Clo many wonderful memories at Melcher Park to cherish.
Angelo is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carol Ann Marzullo, including his children: Joseph Di Tata of Florida; Elaine (Charles) Russo of Scotia; Margaret Di Tata-Rakas of Binghamton; Angelo (Gina) Di Tata of Florida; his grandchildren: Kevin (Shannon) Rakas, Nathan Russo, Patrick (Angela) Russo, Matthew (Brittany) Rakas, Joel (Rebecca) Di Tata, Mary Rakas, Joshua Di Tata; sister 'n' laws and brother 'n' law: Patricia Di Tata, Helen (Marzullo) and David Valentine, Loretta (Marzullo) Rider; many nieces and nephews. Angelo was predeceased by his sister, Bruna Femia, and brothers, Tito Di Tata and Julio Di Tata.
Relatives and friends are respectively invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at The Church of the Holy Spirit (formerly Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church), Main Street, Gloversville, NY.
Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the Mass from 10:30 AM until 11:00 AM at the church.
Interment to be followed at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Rt. 29, Johnstown, NY, with military honors.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home Inc., 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown, NY.
