August Stephen Johnson Obituary
August Stephen Johnson (known as "Steve" to family and friends), age 92, passed away on May 14, 2025, after a long illness.
A memorial service honoring the life of Steve will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Tom M. Wages Lawrenceville Chapel. A livestream of the service will be available for those unable to join in person and can be accessed here: Livestream Access. Prior to the service, the family will gather with friends at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until the service begins at 2:00 p.m.
Steve was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on July 18, 1932 to Benjamin and Caroline Johnson, both deceased. He was the youngest of 5 boys, and all his brothers predeceased him. He graduated from New Brunswick High School ("NBHS") in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1951, where he played football, basketball and track. Steve was Middle-Sex County Player of the Year during his Senior year at NBHS and was inducted into the NBHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1955, where he majored in philosophy and was a star running back for the football team. He later obtained his MBA. He married Helen, his high school sweetheart in 1955, and together, they raised 5 children. He entered Officer Training School for the Air Force in 1955 and became a navigator and bombardier, and then went on to have a distinguished 20 year career in the Air Force, achieving the rank of Major. He served in Texas, California, Ohio, Indiana, and North Carolina as well as overseas in Spain, Greenland, Okinawa, Guam and the Philippines. After retiring from the military, he had a second career with the Civil Service as the Personnel Manager of the EEOC Office in San Antonio, Texas. He served as the treasurer for the local San Antonio chapter of the NAACP for many years, and was a faithful, long time volunteer with CAM (Christian Assistance Ministry) in San Antonio. In addition to enjoying his family, his life's passions were debating, crossword puzzles, playing cards, boxing, gardening, eating exotic foods, and reading the Bible. Steve attended church and Sunday school regularly and exuberantly sang in the choir as a tenor.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen; his son and daughter-in-law, Ken Johnson and Patricia Boone; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Carrie Johnson; his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and David Whitworth; his daughter, Lisa Johnson; his son, Eric Johnson; his grandson and spouse, Shaka and Sarah Hilton; his granddaughter, Sheena Hilton; his grandson, Sean Hilton; his grandson and spouse, Brett and Nathalie Johnson; his grandson, Benaiah Johnson; his grandson, Christopher Johnson; his grandson, Brandon Johnson; his granddaughter, Sidney Johnson; his great granddaughter, Lydia Hilton; his great granddaughter, Nevaeh Johnson; his great granddaughter, Jedi Johnson; his brother-in-law, Daniel Presley; his furry companion, Louie Bear Johnson; and many nieces and nephews, extended family members, and friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
