Barry J. McGonigle, of Braintree, formerly of Randolph, passed away peacefully at home on July 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after a lengthy and courageous health battle. Born on June 10, 1946, in Boston, Barry was the son of the late William and Rita (Fay) McGonigle. He shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Janet (Peckham) McGonigle, and was a loving father to Jennifer A. (McGonigle) Marnik and her husband Daniel of Holbrook, and Julie A. McGonigle of Walpole. Barry was a devoted brother to Robert McGonigle of FL, and David McGonigle and his wife Ann of CT. His role as a cherished "Papa" to Abby L. Marnik and Evan D. Marnik, filled him with immense joy. Barry leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends who will fondly remember his warm presence.
A proud graduate of Archbishop Williams High School, Class of 1964, where he played football for four years. He also served in the National Guard for two years. Barry's pursuit of knowledge led him to Boston University, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. His academic journey culminated with a Juris Doctorate Degree from Suffolk Law School. Barry's professional life was marked by a 35-year tenure as an attorney for the IRS in the office of the Tax Appeals. Following retirement, he continued to share his expertise in a private practice in Boston assisting with tax issues and estate planning. He briefly taught graduate attorneys at Boston University about taxes. His commitment to education was also evident through his role as a business law instructor at Stonehill College. Barry's leadership and dedication to his work were recognized with numerous awards throughout his career.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Barry was a man of many interests. As an active member of the Quincy YMCA, he and Janet made lifelong friends throughout their weekly visits. His passion for sports led him to coach his daughters' soccer, softball and basketball teams, even stepping in as a referee when needed. He was an avid fan and attendee of all his grandchildren's sporting events. Music was a source of great pleasure for Barry, with the Rolling Stones, Beatles, and Creedence Clearwater Revival being among his favorite bands.
Barry's faith was a cornerstone of his life. A devout Catholic, he served as a CCD Instructor at St. Clare Church, where he was a longtime parishoner. His civic engagement included a tenure on the Finance Committee for the Town of Braintree. Barry enjoyed the camaraderie of his monthly poker games with his friends and his tennis and racquetball games. He cherished the time spent with his family at their lakefront home in NH and was an avid traveler, relishing trips to Ogunquit, ME, Block Island, Caribbean cruises, and winter retreats in Florida. Above all, Barry's love for his family and two grandchildren was unparalleled.
Barry's legacy is one of love, kindness, and intelligence. His impact on the lives he touched will continue to resonate, and his memory will be treasured by all who knew him. Barry's journey through life was marked by his dedication to family, friends, and community. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Just learned this afternoon 7/21/25 of Barry's passing ... Wish I had known sooner to be there for his services ... I worked with Barry at the IRS Office of Appeals in Boston for many years ... He was one of my most respected co-workers, as well as a friend ... Barry often served as an acting Associate Chief in managing our office while I was in a similar position ... It was a great pleasure working with him, getting things done, and having enjoyable chats and interactions along the way ... I shed a tear or more today when I learned of his passing, and will always remember him for his professionalism, insight and friendship ... The Best ... God Bless His Memory ... Gene Peschier.
