Benjamin Joel Crowl, 92, of Corning, NY passed away peacefully on November 28, 2023 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira, NY.
Born on September 17, 1931, in Campbell, NY, Benjamin lived a life marked by humility, dedication, loyalty, and unwavering support for his family and community.
He was a graduate of Painted Post High School and in 1951 entered the United States Air Force and served for four years where he worked in the legal department. Ben started a four year journeyman's apprenticeship at Corning Glass Works in 1959 and worked as a machinist tool and die maker for many years and retired as a supervisor. Benjamin dedicated over 40 years of service to Corning Incorporated before his retirement in 1994. His hard work and dedication reflected the steadfast and reliable character that marked his life. Many will remember Ben as a loyal servant of his community, having served as a past Fire Chief for the Caton Volunteer Fire Department. He served on the Steuben County Fire Association, was a fire investigator, fire training educator, and served as the Chairman of the District Board of Commissioners. He was also a faithful member of North Baptist Church. Ben enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, RC airplanes, square dancing, hunting, softball, and watching the Yankees.
Benjamin is survived by his children, Pamela Crowl, Michael (Dina) Crowl, and Dana (Robin) Crowl; stepchildren, John (Chris) Hiney, David (Nancy) Hiney; 14 grandchildren many great-grandchildren; girlfriend, Joyce Janes; sister, Christine Gartman, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; his parents, Francis and Anna (Morse) Crowl; and second wife, Sally; stepdaughter, Deborah Lowe; and siblings, Marshall, Mary, David, and Phyllis.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 7th from Noon until 2 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 East 1st Street in Corning where funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM with Pastor John Bennett officiating. Burial with Military and Fire Honors will be in Barnard Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Caton Volunteer Fire Company, 1118 Caton Rd, Corning, NY 14830.
