It is with great sadness that the family of Bernard J. "Bernie" McGraw, 86, of Woodbridge, Virginia, announces his passing on August 20, 2025.

Born on February 14, 1939, in Spring Valley, Illinois, Bernie was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine McGraw. He was a loving husband to his wife, Lydia, for many years until her passing in 2012.

A passionate athlete and sports fan, Bernie played baseball and basketball throughout his high school years at St. Bede Academy in Peru, Illinois, where he was named Athlete of the Year and later inducted into the St. Bede Hall of Fame. As a teenager, he worked alongside his father, siblings, cousins, and uncles at the family business, Enterprise Bottling Company in LaSalle, Illinois.

He attended DePaul University, where he continued his love of basketball, playing under legendary coach Ray Meyer. Following college, Bernie completed Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. He served multiple tours in Vietnam and was stationed around the globe, proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps for over 20 years, retiring with the rank of Major. After military retirement, he continued serving his country through Defense and Security Contract work.

Family meant everything to Bernie. He cherished gatherings in Spring Valley with the Mignone relatives, especially enjoying sports talk with cousins and uncles. Known for his wit, loyalty, and generous spirit, Bernie will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lydia, his parents Joseph and Catherine McGraw, and his brother Joseph.

He is survived by his loving siblings:

William McGraw and spouse Gail of Chicago, Illinois

Paul McGraw of Woodbine, Maryland

Robert McGraw and spouse Elsie of Cleveland, Ohio

Peggy McGraw Milanesi and spouse Lou of Eau Claire, Wisconsin

Mary McGraw Gordon and spouse Eddie of Palm Springs, California

He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be held at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home in Woodbridge, VA, followed by Military Services at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Dates to be announced.
