"Ex Chief " Bertram Morris, 83, of
Keyport, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025 in Edison, NJ. A longtime resident of
Keyport, New Jersey, Bert was born on May 4, 1941, in Red Bank and spent his formative years in Keyport, where he would go on to leave a memorable mark on his community through decades of service and dedication. Bert attended Keyport High School. He was employed by Schanck, Inc, Bayshore Stationers, and Keyport Borough as a laborer, from 1983 until his retirement in 2004.
A proud veteran, Bert served in both the National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve, earning an honorable discharge from each branch.
Bert's commitment to public service extended far beyond his professional and military endeavors. He was a life member of the Keyport Fire Department and Liberty Hose Co. #3. Over his 50 years of active fire service, he held numerous leadership roles including, Chief of the Keyport Fire Department in 1991, Captain, and President of Liberty Hose Co. #3, Trustee of Liberty Hose Co. #3. He was also a life member of the Bayshore Active Fire Chief Association, New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association, Keyport Exempt Fire Association, and the New Jersey Fireman's Relief Association. His civic involvement included serving as a past Cub Scout leader and a member of the Keyport Bicentennial Committee.
In addition to his public service, Bert found joy in carpentry and home repair projects and gardening. He was known for his hardworking nature, jovial spirit and charisma. These qualities endeared him to all who knew him.
Faith played an important role throughout Bert's life. A devoted churchgoer who regularly volunteered at various congregations throughout the years, he most recently worshipped at Hazlet Bible Church in Hazlet, NJ.
After retiring in 2004, Bert moved with his beloved wife, Judith Morris, to the Poconos in Pennsylvania. They spent many joyful and tranquil years there together. In 2020, they returned to Hazlet to be closer to their cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bert leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Judith. Sons, Mark Morris (Joanne), Michael Morris (Cindy), and Matthew Morris (Arshe Mahmood-Morris); grandchildren Michael, (Lizzette), Mark Jr (Elizabeth), Joanna, and Mateen; great-grandchildren Braxton, McKenzie, Katana, and Samara; brother Richard Morris and sister-in-law Ginger, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother, Eleanor; Father Bertram, sister; and grandchildren Jennifer, Christopher, Justin, and Amina.
A funeral service honoring Bert's life is being held at Day Funeral Home in
Keyport, NJ. Sunday 2-4 / 7-9 and Monday 10 AM. A service will be offered 11 AM followed by entombment at Green Grove Cemetery in
Keyport, NJ.
