It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda J. McManus Carter, beloved sister, aunt, teacher, and friend. Born to Catherine Marie McManus Corbett and James Pierce "Buster" McManus on November 16, 1941, in Winn Parish, Louisiana, Brenda touched the lives of all who knew her with her warmth, kindness, and passion for teaching.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sharon J. Maxwell; husband Lee Edwin Carter; and her great-great nephew, Chase McManus. She is survived by her devoted brother, Jerry P. McManus and wife Carolyn, step brother Steve Corbett (wife Sami) and a large extended family that will forever cherish her memory. This includes nephews Tony (wife Liz), Tracy (wife Vicki); great nieces and nephews Kasey Renois (husband Daniel), Trey McManus (wife Lacey), Brad McManus (wife Jenene), and Toni McAllister (husband Josh); and numerous great-great nieces and nephews. Brenda was also deeply grateful for the care and companionship of her special nurse and friend, Sharon Starks.

After graduating from high school in Winnfield, she became a proud graduate of the University of Houston in 1980. Brenda began her long and rewarding teaching career in 1981, first at Crosby High School in Crosby, Texas, and later at Hitchock High School in Hitchock, Texas. Over the course of her career, Brenda earned numerous "Teacher of the Year" awards for her dedication to her students, her enthusiasm in the classroom, and her unwavering commitment to education. She touched the lives of countless students and colleagues, leaving a legacy in the world of education.

After retiring, Brenda returned home to Winn Parish, where she continued to contribute to her community by substitute teaching for many years.

Later in life, she met her soul mate Lee Edwin Carter. They were married on December 13, 2008. They cherished each other and enjoyed each moment of the near 15 years together. Traveling was a special treat for them as they loved to visit Fredericksburg, Branson, and their beloved family and high school reunions. After Lee Edwin's passing, Brenda came home to Winn Parish and enjoyed a simpler life. She was constantly writing and creating, her impeccable sense of fashion matched only by her flair for trying new styles and perfecting every accessory. Brenda was also an animal lover; her pets brought her much happiness, including her nephew's cherished dog, "Rosebud", who would visit her often and share in her affection.

Brenda's joyful spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy as a teacher, a sister, an aunt, and a friend will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. Brenda left this world surrounded by her loved ones.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at New Jerusalem Cemetery with Tony McManus and Rev. Bruce Weatherford officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:45 PM until 2:45 PM.
