Brian Frederick Campbell, 85, of Morris Plains, New Jersey, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, to Frederick and Agnes Campbell, he raised his family in Skillman, New Jersey, spending many wonderful summers in Ocean City and Avalon. He was a resident of Morris Plains for the past seven years.
Brian attended St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark. Fulfilling his childhood dream, he attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1963 and serving as a Surface Warfare Officer on large and small ships, including the aircraft carrier USS Independence and the frigate USS Brumby. Brian continued his service in the United States Naval Reserve, retiring as a full captain.
Brian spent most of his civilian career with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority's Engineering and Maintenance Department, overseeing the operation of all facilities along the turnpike.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Carol Ann Campbell (née Noble); his sons Geoffrey (Roberta), David (Jennifer), and Christopher (Celeste); grandchildren, Finn, Audrey, Emerson, and Colin; and his sister Maureen Campbell.
Dad was deeply devoted to his wife Carol. They shared a lifetime together, singing in the church choir for many years, tailgating at Princeton University football games, and traveling and dining out whenever they could. He loved college basketball and college football, and never missed an Army-Navy Game.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2024, from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, Princeton, New Jersey 08542.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 10:30 am at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church, 47 Skillman Road, Skillman, New Jersey 08558. Military honors and burial will follow at the Rocky Hill Cemetery, Skillman, New Jersey 08558.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Naval Academy Foundation (www.usna.com/give). Please choose "Academic Excellence" in support of the Class of 1963 Legacy Project.

Brian was my boss when I came to the Turnpike at the end of 1999. While reputation preceded him, it turned out that he was so very much more than anticipated. A more gracious, more skilled, and more honorable man than words could ever equate. By far, my best memories of the Turnpike were generated in his company. It is a sincere and lasting honor to have known and spent time with him, and his passing is felt at a level reserved for those who made the world a better place. Fair seas and steady winds, Captain.
