Robert "Bud" Nickels, born July 7, 1929, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, at McHenry Hospital. A longtime resident of McHenry, IL, Bud was a man of deep faith, unwavering loyalty, and quiet strength.
Bud proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Airman First Class. His service spanned from August 23, 1950, to August 22, 1954, instilling in him a sense of duty and commitment that he carried throughout his life.
After settling in McHenry in 1959, Bud dedicated 31 years to working as a machinist for ComEd, the local electric company, retiring on February 22, 1989. Known for his skill, diligence, and unwavering work ethic, he was respected by colleagues and beloved by friends. A man who took joy in simple pleasures, Bud loved spending time bowling, playing cards or horseshoes with friends, and traveling, especially enjoying his time spent in Arizona.
Bud was a loyal and active parishioner at St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he found community and spiritual nourishment. His faith was a guiding light, shaping his values and inspiring those around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Alma Nickels (Hansman), and his beloved wives, Viola and Lou-Ann Nickels.
He is survived by his loving children, Renee (John) Jenkins and William (Lori) Nickels, and cherished grandchildren, Michael (Erin) Jenkins, Steven (Anne Raven) Jenkins, Erin (Michael) Herriges, and Ryan Nickels. Bud also leaves behind great-grandchildren Remi, Cosima, Frederick, Callen, and Tenley; a dear sister, Gloria Holy; and his special friend, Sharon Franklin, along with many nieces and nephews who will miss his kindness and gentle spirit.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass the next day at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1401 N Richmond Rd, McHenry, IL 60050, at 11:00 a.m.
