Byron Eugene, "By", Butler, age 92, passed peacefully on November 25, 2025, in Covington, Indiana. A devoted educator, veteran, and beloved family man, Byron lived a life marked by service, humor, and a deep commitment to his community.
Born on September 7, 1933, in Carroll County, Indiana, Byron was the son of Thelma and R. Glenn Butler. He was later parented by his mother and stepfather Denvil Taylor. Byron graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School and went on to earn both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Purdue University-an academic foundation that would support a lifelong dedication to teaching and mentoring young people.
Byron began his teaching career in South Bend, Indiana before returning to Lafayette to join the Lafayette School Corporation. He taught at Crouch Elementary before transferring to Sunnyside Junior High School. There, he not only educated students in the classroom but also coached 7th grade boys' football, basketball, and track teams. His influence extended far beyond academics; he helped shape the character and confidence of countless young athletes over the years.
Before embarking on his teaching career, Byron served honorably as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. His military service reflected the same sense of duty and integrity that he carried throughout his life.
A man of deep faith, Byron was a lifetime member of Lafayette First Christian Church. He taught Sunday School for many years, sharing both spiritual guidance and personal wisdom with members of his congregation.
Byron's zest for life was evident in his many hobbies. He loved camping and fishing-often finding peace in nature-and enjoyed bowling and playing cards, especially bridge. A skilled woodworker and carpenter, he took pride in creating with his hands. His adventurous spirit led him across 49 of the 50 U.S. states during his travels.
He will be remembered for his witty sense of humor and happy demeanor-traits that endeared him to all who knew him. Known for his strong work ethic and generous heart, Byron was always ready to lend a hand to those in need.
Byron was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Judith Ann Butler; parents Thelma and R. Glenn Butler; stepfather Denvil Taylor; stepbrother Larry Taylor; son-in-law Raymond Broughton; and great-granddaughter Destiny.
He is survived by his twin daughters Carrie (Gerald) Bowman and Dawn (Raymond) Broughton; a son Dennis Eugene Butler; six grandchildren: Eric, Jill, Schuylar, Jennifer, Kristian, and Raychael; eleven great-grandchildren; a stepbrother Rex (Lana) Taylor; and a stepsister Kathy (Jeff) Carlton.
Visitation and memorial service will be held at the Tippecanoe Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, December 5th from 12pm to 2pm. Interment will follow with military honors recognizing Byron's service to his country.
May Byron's memory brings comfort to those who knew him and serves as a lasting reminder of a life well-lived through kindness, dedication, and love.
