Blaine - Carl Daniel Sherwindt (Haskiel Dovid) of Blaine, ME, departed from his family on June 14, 2025, at the age of 86 years old.
Carl was born on Coney Island, New York on August 18, 1938. He lived in the Bronx, New York until he was 17 years old. At age 17, Carl convinced his father to sign papers giving him permission to join the United States Navy. The Navy was the love of his life, until 1960, when he met his true love, Barbara Ellen Stacy. Carl and Barbra were married on June 29, 1962. His home base was Portsmouth, Virginia until he retired from the Navy as an MMC, Machinist's Mate Chief Petty Officer, in 1976. In 1976, they built a new home and farm in West Virginia. In 1979, when their daughter Ruth's husband, Dale, passed away leaving her with two children, Dean (8) and Stacey (5), they then sold their home and most of their belongings and moved to Blaine, Maine, to support Ruth with her two children. Blaine became their permanent home.
Carl began working for Boger-Brewer's Garage in 1979. The Brewer family become very special to him, and like a second family. Their daughter, Ruth, remarried Alton Weeks in 1982, and they had a daughter, Charity. In the 1980s, Carl and Barbara committed themselves to supporting Dean and Stacey at school events and activities, while also babysitting Charity. For the next ten years, Carl and Barbra worked and saved pennies to build their dream home. With the help of family and many friends, they were able to build their forever home on Kinney Road, which they moved into in 1991.
Over the next couple decades, Carl dedicated his life to ensuring his daughter and grandchildren had all the love, kindness, support, and basic needs that he missed out on, spoiling them anyway he could, while making sure to instill morals, values, and life skills into them. In 1992, Carl and his wife had a huge August birthday barbecue party, hosting over 100 friends and family at their new home. Carl's heart was broken in 1993, when tragedy would strike his family at the sudden and unexpected death of his grandson, Dean.
A new beginning for the family came in 1994, when Stacey married her late husband, Cameron Price. For the next several years, he continued showering his family with an abundance of love. In 2004, his family grew once again when Charity married Raymond Mayhew. Over the years, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were born, sparking a new joy and life in him. His love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren continued to grow with each grandchild that was born and adopted, until he passed.
In 2010 to 2020, he and Barb made several road trips back to the south to spend time with Martha Dotson, their daughter, as well as grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In 2018, Barbara, the love of his life, started declining in health, and Carl began his journey of becoming a caregiver to his wife. In 2022, his love passed, and once again, his heart was broken. They were able to celebrate 60 wonderful years of marriage together before she passed. The remaining years of his life were spent navigating life without his love and still supporting and loving his children and grandchildren to the best of his ability without Barbara. While living in Blaine, Carl became a social butterfly, making many friends and not knowing the word stranger. He was quick to help his friends anyway he could and always loved sharing a story and laugh with them. He will be best remembered by the stories he shared, his generosity, kindness, love, stubbornness, and how he always put his family before himself.
He is survived by his sisters Maxine and Lorraine Sherwindt of New York, his daughters, Martha Dotson of West Virginia and Ruth (Alton) Weeks of Maine, his grandchildren Ginger (Rickey) Steele of North Carolina, Julie Dotson, Ricky Dotson, and Sammy (Annette) Dotson all of West Virginia, Stacey Price and Charity (Raymond) Mayhew both of Maine, 11 great-grandchildren in the South and 7 great-grandchildren in Maine.
He was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Pauline Sherwindt and the late Evelyn (Simon) Sherwindt, his wife Barbara, son-in-law Dale, son-in-law Sam, grandson Carl David, granddaughter Renee, grandson Dean, and grandson-in-law Cameron.
A visitation will be held 2 PM Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Kings Grove Cemetery in Mars Hill, where a graveside service will be conducted at 3 PM. Arrangements in care of Duncan Funeral Home 8 Main Street, Mars Hill Maine, 04758.
