Carl Nathan Steinberg, who loved his hometown of Freehold so deeply that he collected enough pieces of its past to fill a warehouse, died on August 19, 2025 at Trident Medical Center, North Charleston, S.C. He was 73.
Carl was a graduate of Freehold High School, Brookdale Community College in 1972, and Trenton State College, Class of 1974.
Carl was president of Freehold Furniture on Throckmorton Street from 1985 until 2002, a family owned and operated furniture and flooring store established in 1920 by his grandmother. He also operated the Firehouse Shop in the original Freehold Fire Department and Municipal Building on Throckmorton Street, the route along which, as he liked to remind people, the American army marched into the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.
He was a licensed realtor and broker of record for Carlton Realtors, Freehold. He was also member of the New Jersey Society of Auctioneers.
Carl was an active and well-known member of the Freehold community. He was an encyclopedia of local history, and eager to share his knowledge with anyone who would listen. He was a charter member of B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 2612, Millstone Township and a member of the Good Will Hook and Ladder Company of the Freehold Fire Department where he served as company president. He was a member of the Fireman's Memorial Committee, Freehold Fire Department Historical Committee, and Freehold Firemen's Exempt Association. Carl was co-chairman of the Freehold Borough Fire Department "In The Line of Duty" memorial and dedication.
He was a member and past president of the Freehold Township Lions Club, and president of the Freehold Hebrew Benefit Society. Carl was a life member of the Monmouth County Historical Association and the Battleground Historical Society where he was chairman of the Romance of Freehold and My Hometown film restoration project. He served on the Board of Directors and as a vice president of Freehold Beautiful Inc.
He was a member of Board of Directors and vice president of Freehold Center Partnership. He was a candidate for Borough of Freehold Mayor in the 1991 election and served as a councilman from 1989 to 1991 on the Freehold Borough governing body. He was cofounder of the Freehold Gateway Association and chairman of the "Welcome to Historic Freehold" sign Committee.
He was a member of the Freehold Borough Historical Preservation Committee and recipient of the Freehold Township Lions Club Melvin Jones Award.
The Monmouth County Historical Association was the recipient of the Steinberg Collection which contains pictures, photographs, memorabilia, and maps from the Freehold area.
Carl was awarded a Certificate of Recognition presented by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders at the time of the 225th Anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth and Dedication of Liberty Triumphant Statue and Park in Downtown Freehold.
He received the John G. McGAckin Renaissance Award for his contributions to the borough.
Carl was a member of the Freehold Township Historical Preservation Committee, received the "Proud to Be a Partner Award from the Freehold Center Partnership, served on the Freehold Borough Economic Development Committee, a recipient of a Monmouth County Historical Association Award, Freehold Beautiful Beautification Award, the Western Monmouth Chamber of Commerce Good Apple Award; and was honored by the Borough of Freehold for the preservation of the original Freehold Firehouse along with recognition from the Monmouth County Historic Preservation Commission.
His enduring influence on Freehold is cast in marble and granite in four downtown monuments that his efforts made possible – the "In the Line of Duty" memorial in the Marketyard; the firemen's memorial at the firehouse; the Liberty Triumphant memorial on East Main Street; and the World War II memorial at Elks Point.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Elinor Steinberg.
Surviving are his wife, Risa Rosner Steinberg; two brothers, Harris Steinberg and wife Angela and Glenn Steinberg, a sister, Joyce Lieberman and husband Marvin Lieberman; a niece and nephew, Allyson and David Steinberg. Carl was a dad to Erin and Dennis Schonbachler and Casey and Clayton Fillian, grandfather to Henry, Stella, Mia Faye and Madden, and faithful companion to Barkley.
Graveside services will be held at the Hebrew Burial Society Cemetery, 164 Route 33, Freehold on Friday, August 22, 2025 at 10 a.m. under the direction of the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold.
