Carolyn Cusick Simmons Witherstine passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, at 76, surrounded by her devoted family in Spartanburg, SC. Born August 6, 1948, in Salem, Ohio, to Cecil and Mary (Brown) Cusick, Carolyn grew up in Lisbon, OH, before settling in New Middletown. A proud 1968 graduate of Springfield High School, she built a life defined by faith, family, and creativity. Carolyn’s heart found it’s rhythm in nurturing others. She married Daniel P. Simmons in 1969, raising three children; Deborah, Mark, and Keith before his passing in 1987. In 1988, she found love again with Donald L. Witherstine, welcoming four more children; Kevin, Spencer, Donnie, and Beth. For 20 years, she brought precision to the accounting department at Dart Trucking in Canfield, OH, but her true calling was as a homemaker, creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
A woman of deep faith, Carolyn’s voice soared in the choir at Lake Mount Church of Christ in New Waterford, OH, and later at Westview Christian Church in Spartanburg, SC. Her passions were as vibrant as her spirit; she enjoyed reading, crafting beautiful floral arrangements, decorating for weddings, and sharing her culinary creations. Whether arranging flowers or singing hymns, Carolyn’s touch made every moment beautiful.
She leaves behind a legacy carried by her seven children; Kevin D. (Kelley) Witherstine, Deborah R. (Simmons) Brush, Spencer T. Witherstine (Maggie Murphy), Mark D. Simmons (Shannon Fieldhouse), Donnie D. Witherstine (Michelle Bailey), Keith A. (Tiffin) Simmons, and Beth M. (Matt) Witherstine Polley. Her nine grandchildren; Landon Brush (Leela Bhandari), Trinity Simmons, Elijah Polley, Ethan Brush, Jude Polley, Sutton Simmons, Briggs Simmons, Chapel Simmons, and Scotty Witherstine who were her pride and joy. Carolyn is also survived by her siblings Gene Cusick, Tom Cusick, and Robbin (Cusick) Gleghorn. She was preceded in death by her husbands; Daniel and Donald, her parents; Cecil, Mary, and Shirley Cusick and siblings; Gary Cusick, Dianna (Cusick) Reese, and Brian Cusick.
The family will receive friends and family at Lake Mount Church of Christ on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by services at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Firestone Park and Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org , honoring Carolyn’s memory.
