Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2025.
Bob was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Glenn and Gretchen Spickler. He grew up the son of a carpenter and learned building skills he would continue to use his entire life. The family moved west, arriving in California Dec 7, 1941. Bob was the fourth of seven children, he had four brothers and two sisters. Bob went to KCUHS and Bakersfield College. He married Marlene in 1953, they welcomed their first of four children in 1955. He worked as a journeyman for the Carpenters local 743 and a number of other construction jobs in his younger years including roofing, Formica, aluminum siding and aluminum screens. In 1964 he achieved his dream of owning his own restaurant. He and Marlene opened The Sizzler Steak House on Oak St. Later he worked with his daughter Charlene at Blimpie and his son Michael at Charley's Chili Burgers. In his retirement Bob took great joy spending time with his grandkids and many of the kids in his neighborhood. Known for his kindness and work ethic he completed countless woodworking projects that touched the lives of many. Dad was preceded in death by his brothers Glenn, Dale, Don, Paul and his sister Glendolyn. He is survived by his sister Mary Kaye Brady (Jem) children Brenda Wright (Ed), Michael (Susan), Duane (Jonie), Jolyn Cleveland (John), 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and a multitude of friends. Our family would like to thank the staff at The Palms assisted living facility for the love and care they showed him the last couple of years. A memorial will be held Saturday March 1, 11am at St. John's Lutheran Church 4500 Buena Vista Rd. If you would like to make a donation in his memory please give to your local church youth group.
