Charles Hancock Turner, Jr., 78, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern at a later date.
Charlie, son of the late Charles Hancock and Katherine McLean Turner, was a native of Craven County, where he lived until moving to Greenville. Charlie was originally from New Bern and was a 1967 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played first base and pitched for the Carolina Baseball team. He also received his law degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, in 1973. During these years, Charlie served in the United States Coast Guard Reserves for seven years. Following the completion of his education, he made his home in Craven County and practiced law in New Bern and Havelock. In 1995, he made his home in Greenville and continued to practice law in Craven County and Greenville for 48 years.
Charlie loved life and adored his family. Baseball was a lifelong passion for Charlie. He was a tireless champion for the underdog and an optimist, faithfully purchasing lottery tickets. He never won, but it did not bother him. Particularly in recent years, Charlie was a precision gardener, working tirelessly to raise vegetables to share with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Linda White Turner; daughter, Dr. Susan J. Turner of Winston-Salem; son, Charles Hancock Turner, III and wife, Elaine, of Raleigh; step-son, Michael Chadwick "Chad" Clark and wife, Amy, of Greenville; step-daughter, Misti Hignite and husband, Keith, of Greenville; grandchildren, Matilda Lie-Nielsen, Turner Lie-Nielsen, Vivian Kiani and Charles Hancock Turner, IV; step-grandchildren, Meghan Nethercutt, Jami Nethercutt, Brooke Clark, Daylyn Clark, and Brady Hignite; sisters, Katherine T. Anderson and husband, William, Betsy Delphos and husband, William, and Ellen T. Chance and husband, Ken; and a brother, David Turner and wife, Maryann; and many nieces and nephews who loved him.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Legal Aid of North Carolina, Self-Help Bldg., 301 Evans Street #102, Greenville, NC 27858.
