Cody Hurst was born on June 6, 1947, in Greybull, Wyoming, to Dallas and Dorothy Hurst. His early years were spent in Greybull, but the family moved to Spokane, Washington, in the early 1950s. Cody attended Rogers Primary and graduated from Rogers High School, where he first showcased his passion for cars by driving a vehicle, he assembled himself.
Cody's dedication to service began with his enlistment in the Army, where he served in Vietnam. He continued his military career with the National Guard and Reserves, earning the rank of Drill Sergeant. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and he was a proud lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for 40 years.
Professionally, Cody worked as a heavy equipment technician for the state of Washington and later as a bus driver for Spokane Transit Authority. Even after retirement, his dedication to helping others continued as he became a special needs bus attendant for Durham and Mead school buses. Cody had a unique ability to connect with the students he accompanied, making them feel comfortable and confident each day.
In June 1998, Cody married Terry Long of Colfax, Washington. Their life together was filled with love, companionship, and they shared their passions for cars having built several hot rods together. Cody was an avid fisherman and a car enthusiast, having bought and assembled his first car at the age of 10.
Cody's warm and welcoming nature was evident to all who met him. He never met a stranger and was always ready to shake hands and say 'welcome home' to fellow veterans. His kindness and genuine interest in others left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Cody is survived by his loving wife Terry, his son John of Austin, Texas, and his stepson Jason Long of Athol, Idaho. He also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren. Cody was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Orie Joe Hurst.
In honor of Cody's memory, memorial contributions are suggested to The Wounded Warriors Project.
A memorial service will be held on August 1st at 9 AM at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery, 21702 W Espanola Rd, Medical Lake, WA 99022.
Cody's legacy of service, kindness, and passion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
